OET (OET-LV) anger_of_my And_it_will_burn in_him/it on_day (the)_that and_I_will_abandon_them and_I_will_hide face_of_my from_them and_it_was for_devouring and_they_will_come_upon_it calamities many and_troubles and_saying(ms) in_the_day (the)_that not on if/because not god_of_my is_in_midst_of_my have_they_come_upon_me the_calamities the_these.
OET (OET-RV) When that happens, my rage will burn against them, and I’ll abandon them and distance myself from them. They’ll be devoured by other kingdoms, and many disasters and troubles will hit them. Then they’ll say at that time, ‘Didn’t these disasters come to us because our God is no longer here amongst us?’
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וְחָרָ֣ה אַפִּ֣י ב֣וֹ בַיּוֹם־הַ֠הוּא

Yahweh is using the phrase my nose will burn against him as a common expression of the culture to mean that he is angry. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, use a comparable expression from your language that does have that meaning or state the meaning plainly. See how you translated the similar phrase “the nose of Yahweh your God burn against you” in [6:15](../06/15.md). Alternate translation: [And on that day, I will be angry with him] or [And on that day, my anger will burn against him]
Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

Unlike most of the other pronouns in verses 16–20, here the words for them are plural even though they also refer to the singular noun in verse 16 which is translated “this people.” See the discussion of this issue in the introduction to this chapter for more information. If you chose to translate the pronouns in verse 16 as plural, you may want to use plural pronouns throughout this section as is modeled in the UST.
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְהִסְתַּרְתִּ֨י פָנַ֤י
(Some words not found in UHB: and,it_will_burn anger_of,my in=him/it on,day (the)=that and,I,will_forsake_them and,I_will_hide face_of,my from=them and=it_was for,devouring and,they,will_come_upon_it disasters many and,troubles and=saying(ms) in_the=day (the)=that ?,not on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in that/for/because/then/when not God_of,my [is]_in,midst_of,my have,they_come_upon_me the,calamities the=these )
Yahweh is speaking as if he were physically going to hide his face from the Israelites. He means that he will withdraw his favor and protection from them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and withdraw my favor] or [and remove my protection]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
וְהָיָ֣ה לֶֽאֱכֹ֔ל
and=it_was for,devouring
The expression will be devoured is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and I will allow his enemies to devour him]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְהָיָ֣ה לֶֽאֱכֹ֔ל
and=it_was for,devouring
Here Yahweh is speaking of the Israelites experiencing destruction and defeat as if they were going to be devoured by a wild animal. Your language may have a comparable expression that you can use in your translation, or you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and he will be destroyed] or [and he will be defeated by his enemies]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
וּמְצָאֻ֛הוּ רָע֥וֹת רַבּ֖וֹת וְצָר֑וֹת וְאָמַר֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא הֲלֹ֗א & מְצָא֖וּנִי הָרָע֥וֹת הָאֵֽלֶּה
and,they,will_come_upon_it disasters many and,troubles and=saying(ms) (Some words not found in UHB: and,it_will_burn anger_of,my in=him/it on,day (the)=that and,I,will_forsake_them and,I_will_hide face_of,my from=them and=it_was for,devouring and,they,will_come_upon_it disasters many and,troubles and=saying(ms) in_the=day (the)=that ?,not on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in that/for/because/then/when not God_of,my [is]_in,midst_of,my have,they_come_upon_me the,calamities the=these )
Here Moses is speaking of evils and troubles as if they were living things that could search for and find people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and he will experience many evils and troubles. And he will say on that day ‘Have I not experienced these]
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
הֲלֹ֗א עַ֣ל כִּֽי־אֵ֤ין אֱלֹהַי֙ בְּקִרְבִּ֔י מְצָא֖וּנִי הָרָע֥וֹת הָאֵֽלֶּה
?,not on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: and,it_will_burn anger_of,my in=him/it on,day (the)=that and,I,will_forsake_them and,I_will_hide face_of,my from=them and=it_was for,devouring and,they,will_come_upon_it disasters many and,troubles and=saying(ms) in_the=day (the)=that ?,not on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in that/for/because/then/when not God_of,my [is]_in,midst_of,my have,they_come_upon_me the,calamities the=these )
The Israelites are using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [These have surely found me because my God is not in my midst!] or [It is because my God is not in my midst that these have found me.]
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
עַ֣ל כִּֽי־אֵ֤ין אֱלֹהַי֙ בְּקִרְבִּ֔י
on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in (Some words not found in UHB: and,it_will_burn anger_of,my in=him/it on,day (the)=that and,I,will_forsake_them and,I_will_hide face_of,my from=them and=it_was for,devouring and,they,will_come_upon_it disasters many and,troubles and=saying(ms) in_the=day (the)=that ?,not on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in that/for/because/then/when not God_of,my [is]_in,midst_of,my have,they_come_upon_me the,calamities the=these )
The phrase in my midst does not mean that Yahweh has a physical body that lives with the Israelites. It means that Yahweh has a special relationship with the Israelites. You could include this information if it would be helpful for your readers. See how you translated the similar phrase “in your midst” in [6:15](../06/15.md). Alternate translation: [because my God is no longer protecting me] or [because my God has left me alone]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
