OET (OET-LV) Therefore the Yaʸsous said to_them:
Whenever you_all_may_exalt the son of_ the _Man, then you_all_will_be_knowing that I am he, and I_am_doing nothing from myself, but as the father taught me, I_am_speaking these things.
OET (OET-RV) So Yeshua told them, “When you all lift up[fn] humanity’s child on a pole, then you will know that I am God, and that I don’t do anything by myself, but I say all this just as the father told me to.
8:28 lifted up / exalted: There’s a play on words here. See https://bibleDifferences.net/2019/04/25/156-exulted (dead link???)
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὅταν ὑψώσητε
whenever ˱you_all˲_/may/_exalt
Here, John records Jesus referring to when he would be lifted up on the cross to be killed. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: [When you have lifted me up on a cross to kill me]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person
ὅταν ὑψώσητε τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου
whenever ˱you_all˲_/may/_exalt the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man
Jesus is speaking of himself in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this clause in the first person, as in the UST.
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου
the Son ¬the ˱of˲_Man
See how you translated the Son of Man in 1:51.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐγώ εἰμι
I am_‹he›
See how you translated this phrase in verse 24 and also see the discussion of this phrase in the General Notes for this chapter.
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ
from myself
See how you translated this phrase, from myself, in 5:30. Alternate translation: [on my own authority]
Note 6 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples
καθὼς ἐδίδαξέν με ὁ Πατὴρ, ταῦτα λαλῶ
as taught me the Father these_‹things› ˱I˲_/am/_speaking
Father is an important title for God.
8:28 The synoptic Gospels describe Jesus as predicting his death three times (e.g., Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:33-34). John parallels this (John 3:14; 8:28; 12:33-34), showing that the Father governs his Son’s fate.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
