OET (OET-LV) They_answered to him:
We_are seed of_Abraʼam/(ʼAⱱrāhām), and we_have_served to_no_one ever, how are_ you _saying, that You_all_will_be_becoming free?
OET (OET-RV) But some queried, “We are Abraham’s descendants and we’ve never been slaves to anyone, so how can you say that we’ll be set free?”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
πῶς σὺ λέγεις, ὅτι ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε
how you ˓are˒_saying ¬that free ˱you_all˲_˓will_be˒_becoming
The Jews are using the question form here to emphasize their shock at what Jesus has said. If you would not use a rhetorical question for this purpose in your language, you could translate his words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [We do not need to be set free!]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes
πῶς σὺ λέγεις, ὅτι ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε
how you ˓are˒_saying ¬that free ˱you_all˲_˓will_be˒_becoming
If the direct quotation inside a direct quotation would be confusing in your language, you could translate the second direct quotation as an indirect quotation. Alternate translation: [how can you say that we will be free]
8:33 Jesus challenged a widely held assumption about Israel’s status as God’s chosen people. Their heritage as descendants of Abraham had inspired feelings of privilege and immunity rather than obligation and responsibility (cp. Amos 3:1-15).
• The people misunderstood what it meant to be set free. Jesus was not referring to freedom from human slavery; he meant release from spiritual bondage to sin (John 8:34). Truth, not their religious heritage, would free them (8:32; Rom 6:17; 8:2; 1 Jn 3:4, 8, 9).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
