Yahweh is speaking as if, through Jehu, he will actually cut off these people, as if they were plants that Jehu would remove from the ground with a sharp tool. He means that he will have Jehu kill them. Alternate translation: [and I will have you kill in Ahab’s family]

Yahweh is referring to the males in Ahab’s household. To emphasize how angry he is at the serious sins of Ahab and his family and what severe punishment they deserve, Yahweh is using a vivid expression that might be considered vulgar in some cultures. If it would not be appropriate for your readers if you reproduced this exact expression, you could use an equivalent one that would reflect Yahweh’s anger. You could also use plain language. Yahweh is referring to all of Ahab’s male descendants by naming the two main categories of them, one restrained (legal slaves) and one set free (legal free men). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [all male descendants] or [every male descendant]
