OET (OET-LV) to a_virgin having_been_betrothed to_a_man, whose name was Yōsaʸf/(Yōşēf), of the_house of_Dawid/(Dāvid), and the name of_the virgin was Maria/(Miryām).
OET (OET-RV) Gabriel went to a young woman named Maria who was engaged to be married to Yosef, a descendant of King David,
God sent an angel to tell Mary that she would have a son and that his name would be Jesus. He would be a king forever. This surprised and frightened Mary. She asked the angel how this would happen, as she was a virgin. She had never had sexual relations with a man. The angel said that the power of God would overshadow her and cause her to become pregnant. She would give birth to a son, and he would be called the Son of God. Mary believed God’s message, and she was willing for this to happen to her.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
The angel Gabriel predicts the virgin birth of Jesus the Christ
Angel Gabriel announces to the virgin Mary that God will cause her to give birth to a son
The Birth of Jesus is Announced (GNT)
to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph,
He was sent to a virgin who was engaged to a man whose name was Joseph.
to give the message to the pure young woman. The woman had promised to marry a man called Joseph.
virgin: The Greek word that the BSB translates as virgin usually refers to a young girl or woman who has not yet married and has never had sexual intercourse with a man. The young woman was usually at the age that people consider a good time for girls to marry. Not all these aspects of meaning (age, marital status, sexual experience) will necessarily be in focus in a given context. There are even references from Greek literature where one or more of these usual aspects of meaning do not apply: older unmarried women or widows who do not remarry, young wives, and unmarried women who are not virgins. All of this was true of Mary.
Some ways to translate virgin are:
Use a specific term that refers to a young unmarried woman who has not had sexual intercourse. It should not imply that men do not want to marry her because she is ugly or has some other problem. For example:
a virgin
a pure young woman
a young woman who has not had sexual relations
Use a general term that refers to a “young woman” or “young unmarried woman.” Allow the context (especially 1:34) to show that Mary had never had sexual intercourse.
Be careful to choose a translation that will be appropriate for public reading. In some languages, you will have a euphemism or idiom for this. For example:
a woman who has not slept with a man
an untouched woman
pledged in marriage: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as pledged in marriage refers to a legal agreement or promise that a woman/girl would marry a man. Among the Jews, the girl’s father often made this promise to the man on her behalf.
Some English versions translate this word as “engaged.” However, the marriage agreement among the Jews was more strict than the word “engaged” implies in many cultures. It legally joined a man and woman, and it was as binding as marriage. If either the man or woman ended the agreement, people considered them to be divorced. However, they were not allowed to have sexual relations until they actually married.
Some other ways to express pledged in marriage are:
promised in marriage (GNT)
had a legal contract to be married
You may want to include a footnote to explain more about this Jewish custom. For example:
The type of marriage promise in this verse was legally binding in Jewish culture. After the promise, the man and woman usually waited about one year before they married. During that time, they did not live together or have sexual relations.
who was of the house of David.
Joseph was descended from King David.
One of Joseph’s ancestors was David the king.
of the house of David: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as a of the house of David means that King David was one of Joseph’s ancestors. David was king over Israel about one thousand years before Joseph’s time.
And the virgin’s name was Mary.
The name of the virgin/woman was Mary.
And the virgin’s name was Mary: The name of the virgin to whom the angel was sent was Mary. Some English versions give her name earlier in this verse.
In some languages it may be more natural to mention the information about Mary’s name near the beginning of this verse. If that is true in your language, you may want to change the order of the parts of this verse. For example:
He went to 27ca virgin called Mary. Mary 27awas engaged to a man named Joseph, 27bwho was descended from King David.

This introduces Joseph as a new character in the story. If your language has an expression of its own that serves this purpose, you could use it here.

In this expression, the word house describes all the people descended from a particular person. The term views all of those descendants as if they were one household living together. Alternate translation: [who was a descendant of King David]

This is background information that helps identify Joseph further. It is important for readers to know because it means that as [1:32](../01/32.md) indicates, Jesus, as the adoptive son of Joseph, will be an eligible successor to King David as the Messiah. Alternate translation: [who came from the royal line of David]

1:27 engaged to be married: In Jewish culture, marriages were arranged, and engagement was a formal legal contract between two families. Girls were normally married by their mid-teens.
• Joseph, a descendant of King David: See Matt 1:1-16. Joseph’s ancestry is significant because the Messiah was to be a descendant of King David (2 Sam 7:11-16; Isa 9:7).
