OET (OET-LV)And_found DOM heart_of_his faithful to_your_face and_made with_him/it the_covenant to_give DOM the_land_of the_Kənaˊₐ the_Ḩittiy the_ʼAmorī and_the_Pərizzī and_the_Yəⱱūşī/(Jebusite) and_the_Girgāshiy to_give to_descendants_of_his and_fulfilled DOM promise_of_your if/because [are]_righteous you.

OET (OET-RV)You discovered that he was sincere and faithful to you, and made an agreement with him—to give the Canaanite, Hittite, Amorite, Perizzite, Yebusite, and the Girgashite regions to his descendants, and you have ensured that it’s all come to be because you’re righteous.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּמָצָ֣אתָ אֶת־לְבָבוֹ֮ נֶאֱמָ֣ן לְפָנֶיךָ֒

and,found DOM heart_of,his faithful to=your=face

Here, found is an idiom for someone discovering something to be true. It does not mean that God was looking for something he had lost. Alternate translation: “You recognized that he was completely loyal to you”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּמָצָ֣אתָ אֶת־לְבָבוֹ֮ נֶאֱמָ֣ן לְפָנֶיךָ֒

and,found DOM heart_of,his faithful to=your=face

Here, Abraham’s heart represents his thoughts and will, that is, his inner being. Alternate translation: “You recognized that he was completely loyal to you”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּמָצָ֣אתָ אֶת־לְבָבוֹ֮ נֶאֱמָ֣ן לְפָנֶיךָ֒

and,found DOM heart_of,his faithful to=your=face

Here, face is a metaphor for a person’s perception, referring to God’s perception of Abraham. Alternate translation: “You recognized that he was completely loyal to you”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְכָר֨וֹת עִמּ֜וֹ הַבְּרִ֗ית

and,made with=him/it the,covenant

To cut a covenant is a Hebrew idiom for making a solemn agreement with a person. The expression comes from the way animals were cut into pieces during covenant ceremonies to show what the parties wanted God to do to anyone who broke the agreement. But the meaning here is idiomatic. It is not a direct reference to such a ceremony, but only to the making of the covenant. Alternate translation: “you made an agreement with him” or “you made a promise to him”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לְזַרְע֑וֹ

to,descendants_of,his

As in verse 2, seed means “descendants.” Alternate translation: “to his descendants”

Note 6 topic: translate-names

הַכְּנַעֲנִ֨י הַחִתִּ֜י הָאֱמֹרִ֧י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֛י וְהַיְבוּסִ֥י וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖י

the=Kənaˊₐnī the,Hittite the=ʼAmorī and,the,Perizzite and,the,Jebusite and,the,Girgashite

These are the names of six people groups.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

וַתָּ֨קֶם֙ אֶת־דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ

and,fulfilled DOM promise_of,your

As in 5:13, words means the promises that God made to Abraham, and stand means stay in place rather than go away. The Levites are speaking of God’s promises as if they were a living thing that could move around or not. Alternate translation: “you have kept all of your promises”

כִּ֥י צַדִּ֖יק אָֽתָּה

that/for/because/then/when law-abiding/just you(ms)

Alternate translation: “because you always do what is right”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:5-37 This long prayer confesses the nation’s sins and praises God for his compassion throughout history (cp. Pss 105–106; 135–136). It prompted listeners to confess their own unfaithfulness and to call on God to be compassionate and forgive their sins.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
