(Some words not found in UHB: and=DOM ˊAmāsāʼ appointed ʼAⱱīshālōm below/instead_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,army and,Amasa son_of (a)_man and=his/its=name Ithra the,Israelite which/who he/it_came to/towards ʼAⱱīgayil daughter_of Nāḩāsh sister_of Tsərūyāh/(Zeruiah) mother_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab)'s )

Here the author is introducing Amasa as new participant in the story. Your language may have its own way of introducing new participants that you can use in your translation.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

אִ֗ישׁ וּשְׁמוֹ֙ יִתְרָ֣א הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִ֔י

(a)_man (Some words not found in UHB: and=DOM ˊAmāsāʼ appointed ʼAⱱīshālōm below/instead_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,army and,Amasa son_of (a)_man and=his/its=name Ithra the,Israelite which/who he/it_came to/towards ʼAⱱīgayil daughter_of Nāḩāsh sister_of Tsərūyāh/(Zeruiah) mother_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab)'s )

It might seem that this expression contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you could shorten it. Alternate translation: [a man named Ithra the Israelite]

Note 3 topic: translate-textvariants

וּשְׁמוֹ֙ יִתְרָ֣א הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִ֔י

(Some words not found in UHB: and=DOM ˊAmāsāʼ appointed ʼAⱱīshālōm below/instead_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,army and,Amasa son_of (a)_man and=his/its=name Ithra the,Israelite which/who he/it_came to/towards ʼAⱱīgayil daughter_of Nāḩāsh sister_of Tsərūyāh/(Zeruiah) mother_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab)'s )

The account of Amasa’s lineage in [1 Chronicles 2:17](../../1ch/02/17.md) identifies his father as “Jether the Ishmaelite.” The name Jether is simply a variant of the name Ithra, but “Ishmaelite” may have been the original reading here, since identifying Ithra as an Israelite would not provide information that would help readers distinguish him from other men by the same name. If a translation of the Bible exists in your region, you may wish to use the reading that it uses. If a translation of the Bible does not exist in your region, you may wish to use the reading of the ULT.

Note 4 topic: translate-kinship

אֲבִיגַ֣ל בַּת־נָחָ֔שׁ אֲח֥וֹת צְרוּיָ֖ה אֵ֥ם יוֹאָֽב

ʼAⱱīgayil (Some words not found in UHB: and=DOM ˊAmāsāʼ appointed ʼAⱱīshālōm below/instead_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,army and,Amasa son_of (a)_man and=his/its=name Ithra the,Israelite which/who he/it_came to/towards ʼAⱱīgayil daughter_of Nāḩāsh sister_of Tsərūyāh/(Zeruiah) mother_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab)'s )

Abigail was the sister of Zeruiah. Zeruiah was the mother of Joab. Be sure that these relationships are clear in your translation.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / euphemism

אֲשֶׁר־בָּא֙ אֶל־אֲבִיגַ֣ל בַּת־נָחָ֔שׁ

(Some words not found in UHB: and=DOM ˊAmāsāʼ appointed ʼAⱱīshālōm below/instead_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab) on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,army and,Amasa son_of (a)_man and=his/its=name Ithra the,Israelite which/who he/it_came to/towards ʼAⱱīgayil daughter_of Nāḩāsh sister_of Tsərūyāh/(Zeruiah) mother_of Yōʼāⱱ/(Joab)'s )

The author is referring to sexual relations in a polite way by using the phrase had gone in to. The implication, which the author is politely not stating directly, is that Ithra had not necessarily been married to Abigail. Depending on what is helpful in your language, you could use a polite way of referring to this in your language, or you could state this plainly. Alternate translation: [who had slept with Abigail, the daughter of Nahash]

OET (OET-RV)As the replacement for Yoav as army commander, Abshalom had appointed Amasa. (He was Yeter’s son, and his mother was Nahash’s daughter Abigail who was the sister of Yoav’s mother Tseruyah.)

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
