OET (OET-LV)And_ Ḩūshay _he/it_said you you_know DOM I_will_show_you(ms) and_DOM men_of_his if/because_that are_warriors they and_are_bitter_of soul they like_a_bear robbed_of_cubs in_the_field and_father_of_your is_a_man_of war and_not he_will_pass_the_night with the_people.

OET (OET-RV)You yourself know your father and his men—and do remember that they’re powerful warriors—they’re still furious like a bear in the countryside that’s been robbed of its cubs. And your father is an experienced man of war, and he won’t spend the night there with the people.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

אַתָּ֣ה יָ֠דַעְתָּ אֶת־אָבִ֨יךָ וְאֶת־אֲנָשָׁ֜יו כִּ֧י גִבֹּרִ֣ים הֵ֗מָּה

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩūshay you(ms) know DOM I_will_show=you(ms) and=DOM men_of,his that/for/because/then/when warriors they(emph) and_[are],bitter_of creature they(emph) like,a_bear robbed_of_~_cubs in_the=field and,father_of,your (a)_man war and=not spend_the_night DOM the,people )

Hushai is stating the pronoun you separately, even though the verb translated as you know already includes this meaning. He is doing that to emphasize that Absalom has knowledge that should make him realize that Ahithophel has not given good advice. If a speaker of your language would use an explicit pronoun for the same purpose, you may want to use that construction in your translation. If not, your language may have other ways of showing the meaning here. Alternate translation: [You know quite well that your father and his men are warriors]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְאֶת־אֲנָשָׁ֜יו & וּמָרֵ֥י נֶ֨פֶשׁ֙

and=DOM (Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩūshay you(ms) know DOM I_will_show=you(ms) and=DOM men_of,his that/for/because/then/when warriors they(emph) and_[are],bitter_of creature they(emph) like,a_bear robbed_of_~_cubs in_the=field and,father_of,your (a)_man war and=not spend_the_night DOM the,people )

Hushai is speaking as if David and his men actually had souls that were bitter. He means that they were easily provoked to violence. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. If you have already translated the book of Judges, see how you translated the similar expression in [Judges 18:25](../../jdg/18/25.md). Alternate translation: [and prone to violence]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

כְּדֹ֥ב שַׁכּ֖וּל

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩūshay you(ms) know DOM I_will_show=you(ms) and=DOM men_of,his that/for/because/then/when warriors they(emph) and_[are],bitter_of creature they(emph) like,a_bear robbed_of_~_cubs in_the=field and,father_of,your (a)_man war and=not spend_the_night DOM the,people )

The expression bereaved is a passive verbal form. If your language would not use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [like a she-bear whose cubs someone has taken from her]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

כְּדֹ֥ב שַׁכּ֖וּל בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said Ḩūshay you(ms) know DOM I_will_show=you(ms) and=DOM men_of,his that/for/because/then/when warriors they(emph) and_[are],bitter_of creature they(emph) like,a_bear robbed_of_~_cubs in_the=field and,father_of,your (a)_man war and=not spend_the_night DOM the,people )

Hushai is using this comparison to make the point that just as a bear bereaved in the field is enraged and aggressive, so David and his men will be as well. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this point explicitly. Alternate translation: [as vicious as a bear in the wild whose cubs have been taken] or [as fierce as a bear in the wild that has lost her young]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

אִ֣ישׁ מִלְחָמָ֔ה

(a)_man war

Hushai is using this possessive form to describe a man who is characterized by having much experience in war. If a speaker of your language would not use the possessive form in that way, you could express this idea in another way. Alternate translation: [is an experienced warrior]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.OET logo mark
