Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

9:50 Thebez was a stronghold a few miles northeast of Shechem. Abimelech was probably reclaiming Thebez, but he might have been attempting an initial takeover.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־תֵּבֵ֑ץ וַיִּ֥חַן בְּתֵבֵ֖ץ

and=he/it_went ʼAⱱīmelek to/towards Tēⱱēʦ and,encamped in/on/at/with,Thebez

The author is leaving some information implicit that he assumes readers will understand. The people of Thebez had apparently also rebelled against Abimelek. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. The UST models one way to do this.

Note 2 topic: translate-names

תֵּבֵ֑ץ

Tēⱱēʦ

The word Thebez is the name of a town.
