TSNTyndale Study Notes:

9:1-57 The reign of Abimelech was the turning point between the comparative rest of the early period of judges (3:7–8:35) and the decline of the later years (10:1–16:31).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / declarative

וְהָיָ֤ה בַבֹּ֨קֶר֙ & תַּשְׁכִּ֖ים וּפָשַׁטְתָּ֣ עַל־הָעִ֑יר & וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ

and=it_was in/on/at/with,morning & get_up and,rush on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the=city & and,do for=him/it

The messengers are using verb forms that could make a future statement in order to keep conveying a recommendation from Zebul. As in the previous verse, translate them with a form that someone would use in your language to address a superior. Alternate translation: “That way, in the morning … you will be able to start early and rush against the city … and you will be able to do to him”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular

תַּשְׁכִּ֖ים וּפָשַׁטְתָּ֣ & אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ & יָדֶֽךָ

get_up and,rush & against,you and,do & hand,you

The words you and your are singular throughout this verse because the messengers are addressing Abimelek directly. However, they are speaking of what he and his troops will do, so it may be more natural for you to use plural forms if your language marks that distinction.

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

ה֞וּא

he/it

The pronoun he refers to Gaal. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “Gaal”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר תִּמְצָ֥א יָדֶֽךָ

just=as finds hand,you

The messengers are using a common expression that means that Abimelek would do what the opportunity allowed and the situation directed. In other words, Zebul was not making any further recommendation about what Abimelek should do at this point but leaving it to his discretion. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “as the opportunity presents”
