1. Preparing to leave Sinai (1:1–10:10) * Offerings from the tribes, dedicating the Levites, celebrating the Passover, and the cloud over the Dwelling (7:1–9:23)This chapter details the cleansing and consecration of the Levites so that they could serve at the sacred tent. It also provides brief instructions on the orientation of the lamps on the lampstand and on the age requirements for service at the tent.
In this chapter, Yahweh gives Moses instructions on how to cleanse and consecrate the Levites. [8:6–7](../08/06.md) gives instructions for cleansing them: they must be sprinkled with water, shave off their hair, and wash their clothing. [8:8–14](../08/08.md) gives instructions for consecrating them after they have been cleansed: they must offer two bulls, and they must be presented like a raised offering to Yahweh. [8:15](../08/15.md) gives a clear summary: in order to serve at the sacred tent, the Levites need to be cleansed and consecrated like a raised offering. (See: purify and consecrate)
As in Numbers 3–4, the word “keeping” refers to keeping watch or guarding. No one else was supposed to approach the sacred items, so the Levites were required to guard these items, especially when they were transporting them. [8:26](../08/26.md) includes an unusual plural form: “keepings.” It probably refers to all the kinds of guard duty the Levites might need to perform. The word “service” refers to physical labor, particularly taking down and setting up the sacred tent and the items that were in it. The Levites were also responsible for these tasks. See how you translated “keeping” and “service” in Numbers 3–4. (See: servant and watch)
As outlined in chapter 3, Yahweh required the Israelites to pay a ransom to him for the firstborn males that he did not kill during the tenth plague in Egypt, as described in [Exodus 12:29](../exo/12/29.md) and [13:15](../exo/13/15.md). Because Yahweh did not kill the firstborn male people and animals among the Israelites, he considered them to owe him their lives. Instead of taking their lives, Yahweh chose the Levite men to be his special servants in their place. Yahweh repeats some of that information in [8:17–18](../08/17.md). See how you translated the similar statements in Numbers 3.
In [8:24](../08/24.md), Yahweh states that Levites who are 25 years old can begin serving at the sacred tent. However, in [4:3](../04/03.md), the age at which Levites begin serving at the sacred tent is 30 years old. This chapter is chronologically prior to chapter 4 (see the Introduction to Numbers 7), so it is possible that the lower age requirement was updated from 25 to 30 years old. It is also possible that the census in Numbers 4 only included men who were 30–50 years old, but men as young as 25 were able to serve at the sacred tent. There is not enough information to know for sure. In the end, do not harmonize this chapter with Numbers 4; this chapter should say 25 years and Numbers 4 should say 30 years.
In [8:24–25](../08/24.md), as in Numbers 4, serving at the sacred tent is sometimes described as if it were being part of an army and fighting. The rest of the Israelite men had to serve in the army when necessary, but the Levites were exempt from serving in the army. Instead, they served at the tent of meeting. Because of this, their duties as Levites can be described as if it were service in the army. The ULT preserves the army metaphor, and the UST models how to express the idea without this metaphor.
