Key for above GNTs: red:words differ (from our SR-GNT base).
8:11 by this same Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the agent of the resurrection of our bodies. Some manuscripts read “because of the same Spirit,” which would mean that the Spirit is the guarantee that our bodies will be raised (cp. Eph 1:14).
In this section Paul reminded the believers in Rome that God does not condemn them, because the Holy Spirit has set them free from sin and death. Jesus became like an Old Testament sin offering to remove the consequences of our sin. The laws of Moses demanded a righteous life, and in the Holy Spirit we can live that way.
The people who live according to the sinful nature seek to do things that are in accord with that nature. Also, they cannot please God, cannot follow his laws, are hostile to him, and will be punished with death forever. The people who live according to the Holy Spirit seek to do things that are in accord with his desire.
Christians allow the Holy Spirit to work in them. When they do that, they are as if dead to sin and God will give them life. Those without the Holy Spirit do not belong to Jesus Christ.
We put to death the deeds of the sinful nature. We do that by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are God’s children and can do as he does (again, by the power of the Holy Spirit). If we suffer as Jesus suffered, God will give to us his promised inheritance in heaven.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
We must live according to the Holy Spirit, not according to sinfulness
Be Ruled by the Spirit (NCV)
Living by the Power of God’s Spirit (CEV)
And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,
And/But if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus to life again from the dead lives in you(plur),
Also, God caused Jesus to leave the spirits of dead people and be alive again, and his Spirit resides in your hearts/inner-beings. So
And: This Greek word indicates that the topic from 8:10 continues and there is new information about the Holy Spirit and believers. There is possibly contrast between the Holy Spirit giving new life (8:10c) and God also giving life to the believer’s body in the future (8:11c). For example:
And (NIV, BSB)
But (NASB)
if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you: Here the word if introduces a situation that is true. If this first part is true, that supports the then-clause (“He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who lives in you” 8:11b–d).
In some languages, using an if-clause would have a different meaning. If that is true in your language, translate the correct meaning. For example:
the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, so
should the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwell in you
if you agree that the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, and I know that you do, then you should also agree that
The word Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit. The word Him refers to God. In some languages, if you translate Him as “God,” you will also need to translate the word who in another way.By specifying “him” as God, it turns the who-clause into a descriptive relative clause, and some languages do not use that kind of relative clause. For example:
God raised Jesus from the dead, and if his Spirit dwells in you,
God raised Jesus from the dead, and should that Spirit of God dwell in you,
God raised Jesus from the dead, if you agree that his Holy Spirit dwells in you, and I know that you do, then you should also agree that
raised…from the dead: This phrase refers to God making Jesus alive again after he died and was put in the tomb. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
raised…from death (GNT)
brought…back to life (GW)
He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead
then the one who raised Christ/Messiah from the dead
God (he raised Jesus, the one/person whom God appointed to save/rescue people)
He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead: Paul repeated what he has said about God raising Jesus for emphasis. In some languages it is not natural to repeat these words. If that is true in your language, indicate the emphasis in a natural way. For example:
that one
this same God
Christ Jesus: There is a textual issue here:
Some Greek manuscripts have Christ, and the NIV and other English versions follow those. (NIV, GNT, NABRE, NRSV, KJV, GW, NET, NCV)
Some Greek manuscripts have Christ Jesus, as in the BSB. (BSB, RSV, ESV, NJB, NASB, NLT, REB)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the Greek NT 5 has decided it is the best reading.
The order of the words Christ Jesus emphasizes that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah. If you choose the reading Christ Jesus, it is not natural in some languages to have Christ before Jesus. See how you translated this phrase in 8:1.
will also give life to your mortal bodies
will also make your bodies, which/they are certain to die, live again after you die
will also put life in your earthly bodies which die.
will also give life to your mortal bodies: Many scholarsFor example, see Moo (on TW), Morris (on TW), Kruse (page 334), or Cranfield (page 391). Jewett (page 492) thinks it has the same meaning as “life” in 8:10c (ESV: “the Spirit is life”). And Alford (page 390) thinks it refers to building up believers in heaven after their resurrection. think that the words will…give life refer to when God resurrects believers. It probably does not refer to the new life that we have as believers here on earth.
your mortal bodies: The word mortal indicates that earthly bodies die. Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
your bodies that will die
your bodies will dieYongkom Back Translation, by this author, unpublished manuscript.
your bodies that dieKankanaey Back Translation on TW.
See how you translated the word mortal in 6:12.
through His Spirit, who lives in you.
by his Spirit who/he lives in you.
He will do that by means of his Holy Spirit, and this Spirit resides in your hearts/inner-beings.
through His Spirit: There is a textual issue here about the Greek phrase:
It means through his Spirit here, as in the BSB. (BSB, RSV, NIV, GNT, NJB, NASB, KJV, ESV, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, REB, NCV)
It means because of his Spirit here. For example:
because of his Spirit (NIV11) (NIV2011)
It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1), because the Greek NT 5 has decided it was the best reading.
through: Here this word indicates that God will give the task of giving life to believers to the Holy Spirit and he (the Holy Spirit) will do it.
His Spirit, who lives in you: The words who lives in you further describe the Holy Spirit. It does not separate this Holy Spirit from other spirits. For the correct meaning in some languages, translators must avoid the word who. For example:
his Spirit, he dwells in you

if
Paul is speaking as if this were a hypothetical possibility, but he means that it is actually true.
