Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

8.14 Aguntur. Aguntur dicit, non reguntur. Plus est enim agi quam regi: agi enim dicimus aliquem, quasi vix aliquid agentem; regi autem quasi jam aliquid agentem, qui ideo regitur, ut recte agat. Sed aguntur, non quod nihil per se, sed quod, ut aliquid agant, impetu gratiæ impelluntur. AUG., lib. de Correp. et Grat., c. 2. Non se itaque fallant qui dicunt: Ut quid nobis, etc., usque ad accepisse se gaudeant.

8:14 children of God: In the Old Testament, this phrase referred to Israel, the people God called to be his own (see especially Exod 4:22; Jer 3:19; 31:9; Hos 11:1). Paul uses it to remind believers that they enjoy an intimate relationship with God and that they will inherit many of the promises and blessings given to Israel. Christians are no longer minors or slaves, but mature children with full rights (see Gal 4:1-7).
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
γὰρ
for
For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. For here indicates that this verse gives the reason why what Paul said in the previous verse is true. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [This is due to the fact that]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
ὅσοι & οὗτοι
as_many_as & these
Paul is leaving out some of the words that a sentence would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the context. Alternate translation: [as many people as … these people]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ὅσοι & Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται
as_many_as & ˱by˲_/the/_Spirit ˱of˲_God /are_being/_led
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [as many as the Spirit of God leads]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
Πνεύματι Θεοῦ
˱by˲_/the/_Spirit ˱of˲_God
See how you translated the Spirit of God in 8:9.
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations
υἱοί Θεοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅσοι γὰρ Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται οὗτοι υἱοὶ Θεοῦ εἰσιν)
Here Paul is using the term sons in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Alternate translation: [the children of God]
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
υἱοί Θεοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅσοι γὰρ Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται οὗτοι υἱοὶ Θεοῦ εἰσιν)
Paul speaks of these people as if God were their physical father. He means that these people have a father-son relationship with God because they trust in Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the spiritual children of God]
