uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

συνεβίβασαν Ἀλέξανδρον

˱they˲_concluded Alexander

The implication is that some people instructed Alexander about how he could speak to everyone in the theater. You can include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “instructed Alexander about how he could speak to everyone”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

Ἀλέξανδρον

Alexander

The word Alexander is the name of a man.

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

κατασείσας τὴν χεῖρα

/having/_gestured his hand

This likely means that Alexander was waving his hand to get the attention of the audience and signal that he was about to speak. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this specifically in your translation. Alternate translation: “waving his hand to signal that he was about to speak”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀπολογεῖσθαι τῷ δήμῳ

/to_be/_defending ˱to˲_the public

The implication is that Alexander wanted to explain that although he and his fellow Jews did not worship idols themselves, they were not opposing the business of making silver shrines of Artemis. You can include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “to explain to the people that he and his fellow Jews were not responsible for the artisans losing business”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:23-41 The patron deity of Ephesus was the Greek goddess Artemis. Her birthplace was believed to be Ephesus, so Ephesus was the official guardian of the temple. Twice annually, elaborate festivals were held in her honor with athletic, musical, and theatrical celebrations that included singing Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! The temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Conversions to Christianity clearly damaged the worship of Artemis and the associated economic activity, but it became clear that Paul and his associates had committed no crime.
