OET (OET-LV)And_captured a_young_man from_people of_Şukkōt and_questioned_him and_wrote_down to_him/it DOM the_officials of_Şukkōt and_DOM elders_its seventy and_seven man.

OET (OET-RV)He captured a young man from Sukkot and questioned him—writing down the names of the seventy-seven leaders and elders of Sukkot.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיִּשְׁאָלֵ֑הוּ

and,questioned,him

The author means implicitly that Gideon questioned this young man in order to find out the identities of all of the town leaders of Succoth. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “and he questioned him to find out who the town leaders were”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וַיִּכְתֹּ֨ב אֵלָ֜יו אֶת־שָׂרֵ֤י סֻכּוֹת֙ וְאֶת־זְקֵנֶ֔יהָ

and,wrote_down to=him/it DOM officials Şukkōt and=DOM elders,its

The author is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “And he wrote for him the names of the princes of Succoth and its elders”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:13-17 The return journey was probably a straight course (through the unknown Heres Pass) rather than the circular approach needed for the ambush.
• That a typical young man from Succoth could write down the names is evidence that the newly developed alphabetic writing system had taken root in Israel.
• Gideon’s practice of retribution and execution was the norm in his time, though Gideon’s reputation as the Lord’s servant was better served by his skillful diplomacy (8:1-3) than by vindictive punishment.
