OET (OET-LV) Thus YHWH he_says what did_they_find ancestors_of_your(pl) in_me injustice (cmp) they_became_distant from_with_me and_they_walked after (the)_vanity and_they_became_vain.

⇔ that caused them to become distant from me.
⇔ They chased after vanity and became vain.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) What did your fathers find wrong with me, that they went far from following me? That they went after useless idols and became useless themselves?
(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH what? find ancestors_of,your(pl) in,me fault that/for/because/then/when went_far from,with,me and,they_walked after (the),vanity and,they_became_vain )
Yahweh uses these questions to say that since he has done no wrong, his people should not have rejected him and worshiped idols. Alternate translation: “I did nothing wrong to your forefathers, so they should not have gone far from following me, and they should not have gone after useless idols. By doing that they themselves have become useless!”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) they went far from following me
(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH what? find ancestors_of,your(pl) in,me fault that/for/because/then/when went_far from,with,me and,they_walked after (the),vanity and,they_became_vain )
This represents rejecting God and refusing to be loyal to him. Alternate translation: “they rejected me”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) they went after useless idols
(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH what? find ancestors_of,your(pl) in,me fault that/for/because/then/when went_far from,with,me and,they_walked after (the),vanity and,they_became_vain )
This represents choosing to be loyal to idols and worship them. Alternate translation: “they worshiped useless idols”
(Occurrence 0) useless idols
(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH what? find ancestors_of,your(pl) in,me fault that/for/because/then/when went_far from,with,me and,they_walked after (the),vanity and,they_became_vain )
idols that people can use for nothing good. The translation should not make people think that there are some idols that are useful.
2:5 The Israelites worshiped worthless idols, so their lives were ruled by delusions.
OET (OET-LV) Thus YHWH he_says what did_they_find ancestors_of_your(pl) in_me injustice (cmp) they_became_distant from_with_me and_they_walked after (the)_vanity and_they_became_vain.

⇔ They chased after vanity and became vain.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
