OET (OET-RV)An Israeli man asked the Hivite (because Gilead was in the Hivite region), “Perhaps you really live near by? How could we make a treaty with you?”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

(a)_man Yisrael

The word man is used in this verse with the same meaning as in the previous verse. See how you translated it there. Alternate translation: “the men of Israel”

Note 2 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

הַחִוִּ֑י

the=Hivvi

The word Hivite is a singular noun that here refers to a group of people. If your language does not use singular nouns in that way, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the Hivites”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶל־הַחִוִּ֑י

to/towards the=Hivvi

The Hivite nation consisted of multiple people groups of whom the Gibeonites were just one. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could indicate that explicitly. See the chapter introduction for more information. Alternate translation: “to the Gibeonites who were Hivite”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

אוּלַ֗י בְּקִרְבִּי֙ אַתָּ֣ה יוֹשֵׁ֔ב וְאֵ֖יךְ אֶֽכְרָת־לְךָ֥ בְרִֽית

perhaps in/on/at/with,near,us you(ms) live and,how (Some words not found in UHB: and,said (a)_man Yisrael to/towards the=Hivvi perhaps in/on/at/with,near,us you(ms) live and,how make to/for=yourself(m) treaty )

The men of Israel are not asking for information, but are using the question form to emphasize that they do not know where these men actually live and that they must follow the command of Yahweh and not make a covenant with them if they live in an area that is near. If you would not use a rhetorical question for this purpose in your language, you could translate these words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “Perhaps you are dwelling among us. Then we certainly cannot cut a covenant for you!” or “We do not know if you dwell among us or not so we certainly cannot disobey Yahweh by cutting a covenant for you”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֶֽכְרָת־לְךָ֥ בְרִֽית

(Some words not found in UHB: and,said (a)_man Yisrael to/towards the=Hivvi perhaps in/on/at/with,near,us you(ms) live and,how make to/for=yourself(m) treaty )

See how you translated the phrase cut a covenant in the previous verse.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

9:1-27 Joshua once again failed to consult God (9:14; cp. 7:2-4), this time over an unexpected request. Other ancient Near Eastern accounts tell only of a leader’s triumphs; this author also recorded the shortcomings of Joshua and Israel’s elders. The real hero of the story is God, whose accomplishments the author wished to tell.

OET (OET-RV)An Israeli man asked the Hivite (because Gilead was in the Hivite region), “Perhaps you really live near by? How could we make a treaty with you?”

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
