TSNTyndale Study Notes:

16:7 Bowstrings were commonly made of dried animal tendons or gut. Seven was a symbolic number, perhaps connected with the Philistines’ sense of magical power. Samson seems more at home in a Philistine cultural setting than in keeping his Israelite vows that bound him as a Nazirite.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) fresh bowstrings

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to=her/it Shimshōn if bind,me in/on/at/with,seven bowstrings fresh which/who not dried and,become_weak and=I_will_be like=one the=humankind )

Bowstrings were often made from parts of an animal, often from the tendons. The words “fresh bowstrings” refer to those that come from a freshly slaughtered animal that have not yet dried.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) that have not been dried

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_said to=her/it Shimshōn if bind,me in/on/at/with,seven bowstrings fresh which/who not dried and,become_weak and=I_will_be like=one the=humankind )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “that have not yet dried” or “that are not dry yet”
