TSNTyndale Study Notes:

13:8-14 Half the tribe of Manasseh and the tribes of Reuben and Gad had asked Moses for their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan in the land that had been the kingdoms of Sihon and Og (Num 21:21-35; 32:1-42). In return, they had helped the rest of Israel take possession of their inheritance west of the Jordan (Josh 1:12-18; 4:12-13). Here, the author confirmed their possession of these lands.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

With him

(Some words not found in UHB: with=him/it the,Reubenites and,the,Gadites received inheritance,their which/who he/it_gave to/for=them Mosheh in/on/at/with,side_of the,Jordan east,to just=as he/it_gave to/for=them Mosheh servant YHWH )

The pronoun him refers to the other half of the tribe of Manasseh, which had already received land east of the Jordan River. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

on the other side of the Jordan, toward the sunrise

(Some words not found in UHB: with=him/it the,Reubenites and,the,Gadites received inheritance,their which/who he/it_gave to/for=them Mosheh in/on/at/with,side_of the,Jordan east,to just=as he/it_gave to/for=them Mosheh servant YHWH )

As the General Introduction to Joshua discusses, here the author is using the term sunrise by association to mean east. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language, here and throughout this chapter. Alternate translation: “on the east side of the Jordan”

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
