Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for Bible-translators and others doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still early looks into the drafted texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

to/for=what taken_away name_of our_father_of,our from,among_of clan_of,his that/for/because/then/when not to=him/it son

The daughters of Zelophehad are using the question form to insist that it would be wrong for their father to be forgotten among his relatives just because he had no son. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [The name of our father should not be taken away from the midst of his clan just because there is not for him a son!]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

לָ֣מָּה יִגָּרַ֤ע שֵׁם אָבִ֨ינוּ֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ

to/for=what taken_away name_of our_father_of,our from,among_of clan_of,his

The expression be taken away is a passive verbal form. If it would be unnatural to use that form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [Why should the name of our father disappear from the midst of his clan]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

יִגָּרַ֤ע שֵׁם אָבִ֨ינוּ֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ מִשְׁפַּחְתּ֔וֹ

taken_away name_of our_father_of,our from,among_of clan_of,his

Here, the name of our father represents the memory of him and his continuing place among his relatives. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [should the memory of our father be lost from the midst of his clan]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

תְּנָה לָּ֣נוּ אֲחֻזָּ֔ה

give, to/for=ourselves property

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of a possession, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [Give to us land that we may own]
