OET (OET-LV)And they having_heard were_glorifying the god, and they_said to_him:
You_are_observing, brother, how_many tens_of_thousands are among the Youdaiōns which having_believed, and they_are_ all _being zealous for_the law.

OET (OET-RV)and when they’d heard all that they praised God and told Paul, “Brother, you’ve noticed how many thousands of Jews have believed in the messiah but they still strive to observe the Mosheh’ laws.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

οἱ & ἐδόξαζον & εἶπόν & αὐτῷ

they & /were/_glorifying & ˱they˲_said & ˱to˲_him

The pronoun they refers in these instances to James and the elders, and the pronoun him refers to Paul. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “James and the elders were glorifying … they said to Paul”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

θεωρεῖς

˱you˲_/are/_observing

Paul does not physically see these tens of thousands of Jewish believers. James and the elders mean that he knows about them. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “You know”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἀδελφέ

brother

James and the elders using the term brother to mean someone who shares the same faith. Since this expression occurs in direct discourse, you may want to preserve it in your translation to show how these believers addressed one another.

Note 4 topic: writing-pronouns

ὑπάρχουσιν

˱they˲_/are/_being

In this instance the pronoun they refers to the believing Jews whom James and the elders are describing. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: “these believing Jews are”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

πάντες ζηλωταὶ τοῦ νόμου ὑπάρχουσιν

all zealous ˱for˲_the law ˱they˲_/are/_being

James and the elders say all here as a generalization for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: “they are very zealous for the law”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

21:20-25 The Jerusalem church leaders urged Paul to strengthen his credibility by demonstrating that he was not teaching Jews to turn their backs on the laws of Moses. At the same time, no attempt was made to force Jewish rules on Gentile converts—those terms had been set previously (15:22-29) and were simply to be honored.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
