OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_said in/on/at/with_act_as_midwives_you_all DOM the_Hebrew and_see at the_birthstool if [is]_a_son he and_kill DOM_him/it and_if [is]_a_daughter she and_live.

OET (OET-RV) saying, “When you assist the Hebrew women as midwives, as you sit there on your stool, if you see that it’s a male, do something so he’ll die, but if it’s a female, then let her live.”

uW Translation Notes:

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר

and=he/it_said

In the UST, the phrase and the king said, is combined with “spoke” from 1:15 (ULT) because the verb for “say” is used twice before he speaks. Having two speech verbs may be strange in some languages. If it would be unnatural to say that the king spoke or said words twice, you may leave one off.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / youdual

בְּיַלֶּדְכֶן֙ & וּרְאִיתֶ֖ן & וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן

in/on/at/with,act_as_midwives,you_all & and,see & and,kill

The king is speaking to the two midwives, so the form of you is plural. If your language uses different forms of “you” depending on the number of people addressed, use a dual or plural form here.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

עַל־הָאָבְנָ֑יִם

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,birthstool

Women sat on this short stool as they gave birth. Therefore, it was associated with birth. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “in the birthing process”

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical

אִם־בֵּ֥ן הוּא֙ וַהֲמִתֶּ֣ן אֹת֔וֹ וְאִם־בַּ֥ת הִ֖יא וָחָֽיָה

if son he/it and,kill DOM=him/it and=if daughter_of she/it and,live

These two statements are hypothetical conditions (starting at if) with instructions for what the midwives should do in each situation (starting at then). Use a natural form in your language for hypothetical situations connected to instructions.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:16 watch as they deliver (literally look upon the two stones): The Hebrew might refer to a birthstool or genitalia.
• If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live: Such selective genocide would not completely deprive the Egyptians of a free labor source. When grown, the girls would be married to slaves from other people groups, effectively destroying Hebrew cohesion while keeping the supply of slaves as high as possible.
