uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל

and=the_sons Yisrael

This is the first of many times in this book that sons of Israel refers to the Israelite nation or people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “And the people of Israel” or “And the Israelites”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

פָּר֧וּ וַֽיִּשְׁרְצ֛וּ וַיִּרְבּ֥וּ וַיַּֽעַצְמ֖וּ

fruitful and,multiplied and,multiplied and,grew_~_strong

All of these verbs mean similar things; they are used together to emphasize that the Israelites became very numerous. If your language doesn’t have as many words that mean the same thing, you can use fewer words and express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “had many children and became strong”

פָּר֧וּ & וַיִּרְבּ֥וּ & וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א הָאָ֖רֶץ

fruitful & and,multiplied & and=she/it_was_filled the=earth/land

Compare your translation of fruitful … and multiplied … and the land was filled here to Genesis 1:28, 9:1, 9:7, and especially Genesis 35:11 where God renamed Jacob to be called Israel.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

פָּר֧וּ וַֽיִּשְׁרְצ֛וּ

fruitful and,multiplied

The birth of children to the Israelites is spoken of as if they were plants that were producing fruit and causing new plants to grow around them. If your readers would not understand what this image means in this context, you could use an equivalent metaphor from your culture. Alternatively, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “had many children” or “gave birth to many children”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד

in/on/at/with,very very

If your language does not use an abstract noun for this idea, you can express the idea behind the abstract noun greatness in another way. Alternate translation: “and were very great”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א הָאָ֖רֶץ אֹתָֽם

and=she/it_was_filled the=earth/land DOM=them

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language Alternate translation: “and they filled the land”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד

in/on/at/with,very very

Here the same word is used twice to emphasize how many the Israelite people had become. If your language does not repeat words like this, express the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “with much power”

Note 7 topic: writing-pronouns

אֹתָֽם

DOM=them

Here, them refers to the Israelites.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:1-22 The need for deliverance was obviously related to the Israelites’ condition (the Egyptians worked the people of Israel without mercy, 1:13); it also was related to promises God had made to the patriarchs years earlier. The Lord had promised Abraham that his descendants would be a great nation, living in freedom in the land of Canaan. At this point, Abraham’s descendants were slaves in Egypt under a pharaoh determined to decimate them as a people. God would have to rescue the people if his promises were to be kept.
