Section 13:22–30: The entrance to the kingdom of God is like a narrow door

In this section Jesus advised people to do their best to enter the kingdom of God while there was still time. He spoke figuratively about this, using the figure of entering through the narrow door. After the owner of the house closed the door, many would try to enter but they would not be able to do so.

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 7:13–14 and 21–23.

Paragraph 13:22–27

In this paragraph someone asked Jesus a question. He replied indirectly by telling the people a parable.

13:27a

And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from.

And he will answer: There is a textual issue here:

  1. Some Greek manuscripts have literally, “he will say, saying to you” or “he will say to you” to introduce the homeowner’s answer to the people. For example:

    But he will say, “I do not know…” (NRSV) (NIV, NRSV, GNT, GW, NCV, NJB, NET, CEV)

  2. Other Greek manuscripts have literally, “he will say, ‘I tell you….’” The clause “I tell you” (or “I say to you”) is part of the homeowner’s answer to the people. For example:

    But he will say, “I tell you, I do not know…” (RSV) (BSB, RSV, ESV, KJV, NASB, REB, NLT, JBP)

It is recommended that you follow option (1).For more information, see Swanson, p. 252, and Blight 2007b, p. 94. It is supported by some of the earliest manuscripts.

The first part of the reply is the same as in 13:25d. Because of this, it may be natural in some languages to supply a word such as “again.” For example:

But he will say again (GNT)

I tell you, I do not know where you are from: This is the same answer as was given in 13:25d. The repetition emphasizes the owner’s disagreement with the people’s claim that they know him. In some languages, it may be more natural to indicate this emphasis by a word such as “really” or a phrase such as “I assure you.” For example:

I really don’t know who you are! (CEV)

I tell you, I do not know anything about you!

13:27b

Depart from me, all you evildoers.’

Depart from me: The expression Depart from me means “Leave me” or “Go away from me.” The homeowner was rejecting the people who asked him to let them in. He refused to have anything to do with them.

all you evildoers: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as you evildoers means “you who do evil.” These people regularly or habitually did what was wrong.

In your language, it might seem that this phrase expresses unnecessary extra information. If so, you could abbreviate it. Alternate translation: [he will tell you]

Since the owner of the house is speaking to the people outside, you would be plural in these instances. The implied “you” in the command to get away would also be plural.
