OET (OET-LV)And answering he_said to_them:
You_all_are_supposing that the these Galilaios, became sinners beyond all the Galilaios, because such they_have_suffered?

OET (OET-RV)Yeshua asked the people, “Do you think that these Galileans were the most disobedient to God in all Galilee that they were made to suffer so much?

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 13:1–5: Everyone must repent

In this section Jesus continued his teaching about God judging people by saying that people needed to repent. Pilate’s soldiers had recently murdered some people from Galilee. Other people had died when a tower fell on them. The crowd that was listening to Jesus thought that all these people had died because they had been evil and God was punishing them. But Jesus told the crowd that they themselves needed to repent just as much as those people who died had needed to repent.

Other possible headings for this section are:

Jesus told people to repent or they would die

Turn from your sins or die (GNT)

This teaching occurs only in Luke.

13:2a–b

Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this fate?: This is a rhetorical question. Jesus was challenging the crowd’s belief that these particular Galileans had died because they had committed worse sins than other Galileans. Here are two ways to translate this question:

Notice that in English, the clause that the BSB translates as because they suffered this fate may be put in different places in the sentence. This is true whether the sentence is translated as a question or as a statement. You should use an order that is natural in your language.

13:2a

To this He replied, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans,

Do you think: Jesus was speaking to people who were mistaken about something. They assumed something that was not true. In some languages there may be a special verb or other expression to refer to a wrong assumption like this.

these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans: The BSB has supplied the word other because it is natural in English in this context. Also, the BSB has followed the Greek in repeating Galileans. In some languages this may be not be natural. Some ways to avoid the repetition are:

these people were worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee (CEV)

they were more sinful than all others from Galilee (NCV)

worse sinners: The Greek word that the BSB translates as sinners refers here to people who habitually do what is contrary to God’s law. The phrase worse sinners is ambiguous. It could refer to people who commit more serious sins or who sin more frequently. Some other ways to translate the phrase worse sinners are:

sinned more

committed more/worse sins

did more wrong/evil deeds

The word “sinner” * last occurred in 7:39e.

13:2b

because they suffered this fate?

because: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as because introduces the reason why Jesus’ hearers assumed that those Galileans were worse sinners than other people. It was a common belief that bad things happened to people as a result of sin. For that reason, the people thought that their terrible death was evidence that they had committed terrible sins.

they suffered this fate: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as they suffered this fate is literally “they suffered these (things).” This clause refers to the terrible or violent way in which these Galileans died. The verb suffered does not indicate a prolonged period of suffering. Refer to their death in a natural way in your language. For example:

those Galileans were killed in that way (GNT)

this happened to them (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys

ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοί παρά πάντας τούς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν)

Together the two words answering and said mean that Jesus responded to what the people in the crowd told him. Alternate translation: [Jesus responded to them]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι, ἁμαρτωλοὶ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο, ὅτι ταῦτα πεπόνθασιν?

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοί παρά πάντας τούς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν)

Jesus is using the question form to teach these people and the whole crowd. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate his words as a statement. Alternate translation: [Do not think that these Galileans were more sinful than all the Galileans because they suffered this!]

ἁμαρτωλοὶ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς Γαλιλαίους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοί παρά πάντας τούς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν)

Alternate translation: [more sinful than all the other Galileans] or [the most sinful of all Galileans]

ταῦτα πεπόνθασιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἀποκριθείς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοί παρά πάντας τούς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν)

Alternate translation: [this happened to them]
