OET (OET-LV) No, I_am_saying to_you_all, but if you_all_may_ not _be_repenting, all will_be_perishing likewise.
OET (OET-RV) No, I’m telling you all that if you don’t turn from your own disobedience and request forgiveness, you all will perish likewise.”
In this section Jesus continued his teaching about God judging people by saying that people needed to repent. Pilate’s soldiers had recently murdered some people from Galilee. Other people had died when a tower fell on them. The crowd that was listening to Jesus thought that all these people had died because they had been evil and God was punishing them. But Jesus told the crowd that they themselves needed to repent just as much as those people who died had needed to repent.
Other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus told people to repent or they would die
Turn from your sins or die (GNT)
This teaching occurs only in Luke.
No, I tell you.
I tell/assure you(plur) that that is not correct/true.
If so, you(plur) are quite wrong.
No indeed! That is not the reason it happened.
No, I tell you: Jesus was denying that these eighteen people had sinned worse than all the other people living in Jerusalem. What his listeners had assumed was wrong. See the note on the identical clause in 13:3a for suggestions on how to translate this. Consider whether it is good style in your language to use the same wording here.
But unless you repent,
In fact, if you(plur) do not repent of your sins,
And if you(plur) do not turn from your sins,
you too will all perish.”
you(plur) all will die suddenly and violently!”
you(plur) all will die like that!”
These verse parts are identical to 13:3b–c. If it is natural in your language, you may translate them in the same way here. In some languages it may be more natural to use slightly different words to express the meaning in this context. If that is true in your language, be sure that people understand that the meaning of 13:3b–c and 13:5b–c is the same.
οὐχί, λέγω ὑμῖν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἐάν μή μετανοῆτε πάντες ὁμοίως ἀπολεῖσθε)
Jesus uses this expression to emphasize what he is about to tell these people and the crowd. Alternate translation: [That is certainly not the case]
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
πάντες ὡσαύτως ἀπολεῖσθε
all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Οὐχί λέγω ὑμῖν ἀλλʼ ἐάν μή μετανοῆτε πάντες ὁμοίως ἀπολεῖσθε)
See how you translated the similar statement in [13:3](../13/03.md). In this case, the people whom Jesus is using as an example were not destroyed by the Romans, so the comparison does not include that detail. Alternate translation: [you too will be destroyed]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
