OET (OET-LV)And the centurion and the ones with him guarding the Yaʸsous, having_seen the earthquake and the things having_become, were_ exceedingly _afraid saying:
Truly this one was son of_god.

OET (OET-RV) The Roman officer and his soldiers who were guarding Yeshua were very frightened when they felt the earthquake and saw what happened, and said, “This man really was a son of God!”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δὲ

and

Here, the word But introduces the next thing that happened. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces the next event, or you could leave But untranslated. Alternate translation: “Then”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν

the_‹ones› with him guarding ¬the Jesus

Here Matthew implies that the soldiers were guardingJesus to prevent anyone from rescuing him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. See how you expressed the similar idea in 27:36. Alternate translation: “the ones with him guarding Jesus to prevent anyone from rescuing him”

Note 3 topic: writing-quotations

saying

Consider natural ways of introducing direct quotations in your language. Alternate translation: “and they said”

Note 4 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

Θεοῦ Υἱὸς

˱of˲_God (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος καὶ οἱ μετʼ αὐτοῦ τηροῦντες τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἰδόντες τὸν σεισμὸν καὶ τὰ γενόμενα ἐφοβήθησαν σφόδρα λέγοντες ἀληθῶς Υἱὸς Θεοῦ ἦν οὗτος)

Son of God is an important title for Jesus that describes his relationship with God the Father.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

27:54 The Roman officer and the other soldiers were Gentiles.
• the Son of God: This may be an unqualified affirmation that Jesus is the unique Son of God (see 14:33; 16:16) or possibly a more general affirmation of Jesus’ innocence (see Luke 23:47). They are responding to the earthquake and all that had happened as evidence of divine interest in this occasion.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
