OET (OET-RV) because he taught like someone who had authority, and not like their regular teachers of the law.
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
γὰρ
for
Here, the word for introduces the reason why “the crowds were astonished by his teaching” (7:28). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a reason, or you could leave for untranslated. Alternate translation: “since”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
ἐξουσίαν ἔχων
authority having
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of authority, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “one having been authorized”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
οὐχ ὡς οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν
not as the scribes ˱of˲_them
Matthew is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “not as their scribes taught them”
7:28-29 Jesus began teaching only his disciples (5:1), but crowds had followed up the mountainside as well.
• Unlike the teachers of religious law, whose authority was derived from the Scriptures they quoted or from the teachings of previous scholars, Jesus taught with real—that is, direct—authority. He quoted Scripture in the Sermon, but his teaching was based on his own authority as the Messiah.
OET (OET-RV) because he taught like someone who had authority, and not like their regular teachers of the law.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Greek words that they’re translated from.
