OET (OET-LV)Therefore everyone whoever is_hearing the these messages of_me and is_doing them, they_will_be_being_likened to_a_ prudent _man, who built the house of_him on the rock.

OET (OET-RV)Therefore anyone who hears these messages of mine and puts them into practice, they can be likened to a sensible person who built their house on the rock.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

οὖν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πᾶς Οὖν ὅστις ἀκούει μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί ποιεῖ αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί φρονίμῳ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν πέτραν)

Here, the word Therefore introduces a conclusion that is based on what Jesus has said in [7:21–23](../07/21.md) and perhaps also what he said in [7:15–20](../07/15.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces this kind of conclusion, or you could leave Therefore untranslated. Alternate translation: [Because of all that] or [So then]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μου τοὺς λόγους τούτους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πᾶς Οὖν ὅστις ἀκούει μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί ποιεῖ αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί φρονίμῳ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν πέτραν)

Here, the phrase these words of mine could refer to: (1) what Jesus has said in this section of Matthew, which began in [5:3](../05/03.md). Alternate translation: [the words I have been speaking] (2) what Jesus teaches in general. Alternate translation: [the words I speak]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρὶ φρονίμῳ, ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν ἐπὶ τὴν πέτραν

˱they˲_˓will_be_being˒_likened (Some words not found in SR-GNT: πᾶς Οὖν ὅστις ἀκούει μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί ποιεῖ αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί φρονίμῳ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν πέτραν)

Jesus compares those who do what he has said to a person who builds his house on the rock, where it is secure and not easily knocked down. He means that people who do what he has said can be as confident about how God will judge them as the wise man is confident about the security of his house. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this idea more explicitly. Alternate translation: [will be as sure about God’s favor as a wise man is sure that his house, which he built upon the rock, is secure]

Note 4 topic: translate-tense

ὁμοιωθήσεται

˱they˲_˓will_be_being˒_likened

Here Jesus uses the future tense to speak about something that is generally true. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use whatever tense is most natural for expressing a general truth. Alternate translation: [is compared to]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁμοιωθήσεται

˱they˲_˓will_be_being˒_likened

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the comparing, it is clear from the context that it is Jesus himself. Alternate translation: [I will compare to] or [is comparable to]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀνδρὶ φρονίμῳ & αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πᾶς Οὖν ὅστις ἀκούει μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί ποιεῖ αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί φρονίμῳ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν πέτραν)

Although the terms man and his are masculine, Jesus is using the words in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a form that makes this clear. Alternate translation: [a wise person … his or her]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πέτραν

rock

Here, the word rock means the bedrock below the topsoil and clay, not a large stone or boulder above the ground. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express this idea more explicitly. Alternate translation: [bedrock] or [solid ground]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:24 A wise . . . person perceives that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament promises, willingly submits to him, and walks the path that ultimately leads to blessing (5:3-12; 7:13-14).
• Building a house directly on rock provides a much stronger foundation than would a dry, sandy riverbed or floodplain (7:26).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
