master, master, not we_prophesied the in_your name, and we_throw_out demons the in_your name, and we_did many miracles the in_your name?
OET (OET-RV) Many people will complain on judgement day saying, “Master, master, didn’t we prophesy using your name, and exorcise demons using your name, and do many miracles using your name?”
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj
πολλοὶ
many
Jesus is using the adjective many as a noun to mean many people. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you could translate this word with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: “many men and women”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ
on that ¬the day
Here, the phrase that day refers to how God will judge everyone at the end of this time period. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “on the judgment day” or “when God is judging everyone”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, Κύριε, Κύριε
¬the day Lord Lord
Here Jesus again quotes these people repeating the word Lord. Express the idea as you did in 7:21. Alternate translation: “day, ‘My Lord!’” or “day repeatedly, ‘Lord’”
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
οὐ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι ἐπροφητεύσαμεν, καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δαιμόνια ἐξεβάλομεν, καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δυνάμεις πολλὰς ἐποιήσαμεν?
not ¬the ˱in˲_your name ˱we˲_prophesied and ¬the ˱in˲_your name demons ˱we˲_cast_out and ¬the ˱in˲_your name miracles many ˱we˲_did
The people speaking are using the question form to to show that they did many good things for Jesus. If you would not use the question form for this purpose in your language, you could translate this as a statement or an exclamation. Alternate translation: “we prophesied in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name did many mighty deeds.” or “we prophesied in your name, and we cast out demons in your name, and we did many mighty deeds in your name!”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι & τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι & τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι
¬the ˱in˲_your name & ¬the ˱in˲_your name & ¬the ˱in˲_your name
Here, the word name refers primarily to the person who has that name, and it focuses especially on that person’s authority. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable expression or plain language. Alternate translation: “by your authority … by your authority … by your authority”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / yousingular
(Occurrence -1) σῷ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: πολλοὶ ἐροῦσίν μοι ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ Κύριε Κύριε οὐ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι ἐπροφητεύσαμεν καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δαιμόνια ἐξεβάλομεν καὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι δυνάμεις πολλὰς ἐποιήσαμεν)
Since the speakers are talking to Jesus, the word your in this verse is singular.
7:22 judgment day: The Old Testament concept behind this notion is the “day of the Lord,” when God will come to rescue the faithful and judge the oppressors (Isa 13–14; Joel 2:1-32; Zeph 1:14-16). In Jesus’ teaching, this day is when all will be judged for their response to him (see Matt 10:15; 11:20-24; 12:36; 24:19-50; 25:13, 31-46; Acts 17:31; Rom 2:16).
• Neither charismatic gifts nor public accomplishments in Jesus’ name will necessarily bring God’s acceptance; the decisive issue is obedience (Matt 7:21).
OET (OET-LV) Many will_be_saying to_me on that the day:
master, master, not we_prophesied the in_your name, and we_throw_out demons the in_your name, and we_did many miracles the in_your name?
OET (OET-RV) Many people will complain on judgement day saying, “Master, master, didn’t we prophesy using your name, and exorcise demons using your name, and do many miracles using your name?”
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
