OET (OET-LV)And everyone which hearing the these messages of_me and not doing them, will_be_being_likened to_a_ foolish _man, who built the house of_him on the sand.

OET (OET-RV)But anyone who hears these messages of mine and doesn’t put them into practice, they can be likened to a stupid person who built their house on the sand.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μου τοὺς λόγους τούτους

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί πᾶς ὁ ἀκούων μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί μή ποιῶν αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί μωρῷ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν ἄμμον)

Here, just as in [7:24](../07/24.md), the phrase these words of mine could refer to: (1) what Jesus has said in this section of Matthew, which began in [5:3](../05/03.md). Alternate translation: [the words I have been speaking] (2) what Jesus teaches in general. Alternate translation: [the words I speak]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρὶ μωρῷ, ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τὴν οἰκίαν ἐπὶ τὴν ἄμμον

˓will_be_being˒_likened (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί πᾶς ὁ ἀκούων μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί μή ποιῶν αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί μωρῷ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν ἄμμον)

Jesus compares those who do not do as he instructed to a person who builds his house upon the sand, where it is not secure and is easily knocked down. He means that people who do not do what he has said cannot be confident about how God will judge them, just as the foolish man cannot be confident about the security of his house. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this idea more explicitly. Alternate translation: [will be as unsure about God’s favor as a foolish man is unsure that his house, which he built upon the sand, is secure]

Note 3 topic: translate-tense

ὁμοιωθήσεται

˓will_be_being˒_likened

Here, just as in [7:24](../07/24.md), Jesus uses the future tense to speak about something that is generally true. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use whatever tense is most natural for expressing a general truth. Alternate translation: [is compared to]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁμοιωθήσεται

˓will_be_being˒_likened

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the comparing, it is clear from the context that it is Jesus himself. Alternate translation: [I will compare to] or [is comparable to]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἀνδρὶ μωρῷ & αὐτοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί πᾶς ὁ ἀκούων μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί μή ποιῶν αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί μωρῷ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν ἄμμον)

Although the terms man and his are masculine, Jesus is using the words in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a form that makes this clear. Alternate translation: [a foolish person … his or her]

Note 6 topic: translate-unknown

ἐπὶ τὴν ἄμμον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί πᾶς ὁ ἀκούων μού τούς λόγους τούτους καί μή ποιῶν αὐτούς ὁμοιωθήσεται ἀνδρί μωρῷ ὅστις ᾠκοδόμησεν αὐτοῦ τήν οἰκίαν ἐπί τήν ἄμμον)

The word sand refers to very small pieces of rock that collect together, often on the edge of a body of water or in a desert. The sand constantly moves and shifts, and it is not a solid foundation on which to place anything. If your readers would not be familiar with sand, you could use the name of something similar in your area or you could use a more general term. Alternate translation: [upon mud] or [upon what is not solid]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

7:13-27 The Sermon on the Mount closes with a call to decide about Jesus and his teaching (see 4:23; 9:35). Those who hear Jesus’ message regarding the Kingdom must follow him to obtain eternal life or disown him and experience God’s condemnation. There is no middle way (Deut 30:15-20; Ps 1; Prov 12:28; Jer 21:8).

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
