OET (OET-LV)And_all/each/any/every (the)_person of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) the_hidden in/on/at/with_hill_country of_ʼEfrayim they_heard if/because_that they_had_fled [the]_Fəlishəttiy and_pursued_closely also they after_them in/on/at/with_battle.

OET (OET-RV)Also, there had been some Israeli deserters who’d hidden in the Efraimite hill country heard that the Philistines were fleeing, and so they too also chased and attacked them.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hills

(Some words not found in UHB: and=all/each/any/every (a)_man Yisrael the,hidden in/on/at/with,hill_country ʼEfrayim heard that/for/because/then/when fleeing Pelishtim and,pursued_~_closely also/even they(emph) after,them in/on/at/with,battle )

This does not refer to an ambush. These soldiers were hiding because they were afraid of the Philistines. This can be stated explicitly. Alternate translation: “the Israelite soldiers who were afraid and had hidden themselves in the hills”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
