9:32-43 These verses describe Peter’s itinerant ministry in Judea, particularly along the seacoast. Exercising spiritual powers given to him by God, Peter performed wonderful works, including the healing of Aeneas and the raising of Dorcas. Jesus had promised such signs and wonders to the disciples (John 14:12).
• Typical of Luke’s writing, the healing of a man is matched by the healing of a woman (see Luke 13:10-17; 14:1-6). The people in the area were deeply moved by these miracles, and many were drawn into the faith (Acts 9:35, 42).
Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
εἶδαν αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες Λύδδα καὶ τὸν Σαρῶνα, οἵτινες ἐπέστρεψαν ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον
saw him all the_‹ones› dwelling_in Lydda and ¬the Saron who turned_back to the Lord
The pronoun him refers to Aeneas. The pronoun who refers to the people of Lydda and Sharon. Alternate translation: [when all the people living in Lydda and Sharon saw him, they turned to the Lord]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole
πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες Λύδδα καὶ τὸν Σαρῶνα
all the_‹ones› dwelling_in Lydda and ¬the Saron
Luke says all as a generalization for emphasis. Alternate translation: [those who lived in Lydda and in Sharon]
Note 3 topic: translate-names
καὶ τὸν Σαρῶνα
and and ¬the Saron
Sharon is the name of a plain, on which Lydda was located. Alternate translation: [and in the surrounding area of Sharon]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
εἶδαν αὐτὸν
saw him
The implication is that the people knew Aeneas was bedridden and now they saw that he was healed. Alternate translation: [saw that Aeneas was healed] or [saw Aeneas up and walking around]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
οἵτινες ἐπέστρεψαν ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον
who turned_back to the Lord
Here, turned to the Lord means that the people believed in Jesus and started to obey him. Alternate translation: [and they repented of their sins and started obeying Jesus]
