TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:11 do not modify it: This Hebrew term envisions keeping on a straight path (cp. Prov 4:25-27; Heb 12:13). Once a verdict has been rendered, the sentence must be applied according to the law and the rules of evidence. Justice must be carried out on an unswerving path of fairness and righteousness.

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

Purge the Evil

Sin is so abhorrent to God that it cannot coexist with him. The same should be true for his people. God is holy, and he expects his people to reflect his holiness (Lev 11:45; 19:2).

God required severe measures to remove sin from the covenant community. God offered forgiveness, but only for the truly repentant; those who hardened their hearts could expect God’s judgment—a purging process that devours sinners and their sins and leaves nothing behind (see Deut 9:3; 13:5; Isa 33:14; Heb 12:28-29). Such cleansing is meant to heal the community of believers and deter others from rebelling against the Lord (Deut 17:13).

In the Old Testament, God’s judgment among his people was often immediate (see, e.g., Num 11:1-3; 16:1-50; Josh 7). God thus made his people keenly aware of his demand for obedience and of the penalty for those who did not comply.

God’s retribution is now reserved for the future day of judgment, when the sins of the unrighteous will be exposed and judged (Rom 14:10; 2 Cor 5:10; Heb 9:27; 1 Pet 4:5). However, some instances of calamity can be understood as God’s judgment on his disobedient children (e.g., Acts 5:1-11; see 1 Cor 11:27-30). It is still a “terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb 10:31).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) Follow the law they teach you

(Some words not found in UHB: on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in instruction the,law which/who teach,you and,according_to the,decisions which/who announce to/for=yourself(m) you(ms)_will_make not turn_aside from/more_than the,decision which/who declare to/for=yourself(m) right and,left )

A person obeying what the priests and judge decide is spoken of as if the person were physically following behind the law. If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “You must obey what the judge and priests decide about the matter” (See also: figs-activepassive)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

עַל־פִּ֨י הַתּוֹרָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יוֹר֗וּךָ וְעַל־הַמִּשְׁפָּ֛ט אֲשֶׁר־יֹאמְר֥וּ לְךָ֖

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in instruction the,law which/who teach,you and,according_to the,decisions which/who announce to/for=yourself(m)

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the phrases with a word other than and in order to show that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: “According to the mouth of the law that they teach you, indeed, according to the judgment that they say to you”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

עַל־פִּ֨י הַתּוֹרָ֜ה

on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in instruction the,law

Here, mouth represents the words that someone says. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “According to the words of the law”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לֹ֣א תָס֗וּר מִן־הַדָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר־יַגִּ֥ידֽוּ לְךָ֖ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאל

not turn_aside from/more_than the,decision which/who declare to/for=yourself(m) right and,left

Here, turn aside means to disobey or stop following. Moses is speaking of the word of the judge as if it were a path that one could walk on and disobedience as turning aside, right or left, from that way. If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use an idiom from your language that does have this meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Do not disobey their verdict”
