TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:4 Anything offensive to the Lord could be called a detestable thing (see 7:25; 12:31; 13:14).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

Purge the Evil

Sin is so abhorrent to God that it cannot coexist with him. The same should be true for his people. God is holy, and he expects his people to reflect his holiness (Lev 11:45; 19:2).

God required severe measures to remove sin from the covenant community. God offered forgiveness, but only for the truly repentant; those who hardened their hearts could expect God’s judgment—a purging process that devours sinners and their sins and leaves nothing behind (see Deut 9:3; 13:5; Isa 33:14; Heb 12:28-29). Such cleansing is meant to heal the community of believers and deter others from rebelling against the Lord (Deut 17:13).

In the Old Testament, God’s judgment among his people was often immediate (see, e.g., Num 11:1-3; 16:1-50; Josh 7). God thus made his people keenly aware of his demand for obedience and of the penalty for those who did not comply.

God’s retribution is now reserved for the future day of judgment, when the sins of the unrighteous will be exposed and judged (Rom 14:10; 2 Cor 5:10; Heb 9:27; 1 Pet 4:5). However, some instances of calamity can be understood as God’s judgment on his disobedient children (e.g., Acts 5:1-11; see 1 Cor 11:27-30). It is still a “terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb 10:31).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְהֻֽגַּד־לְךָ֖

and,told to/for=yourself(m)

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “and someone tells you about this”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וְשָׁמָ֑עְתָּ

and,hear

Moses is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from earlier in the sentence if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “and you listen to the account”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hypo

וְהִנֵּ֤ה

and=see/lo/see!

This phrase is introducing a hypothetical condition. Use a natural form in your language for introducing a situation that could happen. Alternate translation: “and if, behold”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

אֱמֶת֙ נָכ֣וֹן

true certain

The terms true and certain mean similar things. Moses is using the two terms together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: “it is absolutely certain that”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

הַדָּבָ֔ר נֶעֶשְׂתָ֛ה

the,charge done

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “that someone has done this”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

הַדָּבָ֔ר

the,charge

Here, the matter refers to the act of an Israelite worshipping an idol. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: “idol worship”
