ClVg votum vovit Domino, dicens: Si tradideris filios Ammon in manus meas,[fn]
(votum vovit Master, saying: When/But_if tradideris filios Ammon in hands meas, )
11.30 Si tradideris filios Ammon. AUG., ibid. ISID., in Jud., tom. 5.
11.30 When/But_if tradideris filios Ammon. AUG., ibid. Quemlibet cogitaverit Yephte, not/no videtur daughterm cogitasse; not/no because diceret: heu me! daughter my impedisti me, etc. In icat because se impeditum, not illud that cogitaverat impleret. Quem however potuit cogitare who filios not/no habebat? An conyugem cogitavit and as this fieret God noluit and as this not/no relinqueret impunitum; not who/any postea id auderet: and as magna providentia from this that accidit magnum sacramentum Ecclesiæ figuraretur. From both therefore prophetia adaptata est? that scilicet vovens cogitavit, and that nolenti contingit. When/But_if because conyugem cogitavit, conyux of_Christ Ecclesia it_is. But because huyus Yephte conyux virgo esse not/no potuit, in eo that daughter rather occurrit, inulta not/no remansit voti temeritas, and virginitas Ecclesiæ figurata it_is, cui it_is_said: Filia, fides your you(sg) salvam fecit, vade in pace Luc. 7.. AUG., quæst. 49. De Yephte daughter solet esse magna quæstio, etc., until to as everything which after facts are tanquam opera Spiritus Master who over him factus it_is, intelligenda videantur. ID. But between laudabiles viros, etc., until to as omnino evitetur, but only as differatur, laborat. ISID., in Yud., tom. 5. Yephte Christum significat, because from face brothers suorum, id it_is Yudæorum abscedens, in nations principatum accepit, because everything humanæ salutis sacramenta as_if yuratus explevit: and carnem propriam as_if daughterm for salute Isræl obtulit. Yuravit however patri and vovit after/second illud: Sicut he_promised Master, votum vovit Deo Yacob, that scilicet sacramentum religionis in carnis suæ passione for salute humani generis expleret. This therefore ita through Christum acta are as videantur for religione yuramenti esse completa.
11:29-31 The Spirit of the Lord, a consistent sign of inspired authority, came upon Jephthah, and he journeyed through the tribal lands of Gilead and Manasseh, including his hometown of Mizpah in Gilead, gathering troops. During this time leading up to battle, he made his infamous vow.
Note 1 topic: writing-background
וַיִּדַּ֨ר יִפְתָּ֥ח נֶ֛דֶר לַיהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר
and,made Yiftāḩ/(Jephthah) (a)_vow to/for=YHWH and,said
Here the author is providing background information to help readers understand what happens in the story. Since the first sentence of 11:32 describes the same thing as the last sentence of 11:29, the Israelite attack against the Ammonites, this verse and the next one are describing something that happened just before that. It may be helpful to clarify this for your readers. Alternate translation: [But before he led that attack against the Ammonites, Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh and said]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys
וַיִּדַּ֨ר יִפְתָּ֥ח נֶ֛דֶר לַיהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר
and,made Yiftāḩ/(Jephthah) (a)_vow to/for=YHWH and,said
This phrase expresses a single idea by using two words connected with and. The vowing and saying were not two different actions. The word vowed indicates what Jephthah was doing when he said this. Alternate translation: [And Jephthah solemnly promised Yahweh]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo
וַיִּדַּ֨ר יִפְתָּ֥ח נֶ֛דֶר
and,made Yiftāḩ/(Jephthah) (a)_vow
It might seem that the expression vowed a vow contains extra information that would be unnatural to express in your language. If so, you can shorten it. Alternate translation: [And Jephthah made a vow]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication
אִם־נָת֥וֹן תִּתֵּ֛ן
if to_give give
Jephthah is repeating forms of the verb give in order to intensify the idea that it expresses. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the emphasis. Alternate translation: [If in fact you give]
