SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:26–38: An angel told Mary that Jesus would be born

God sent an angel to tell Mary that she would have a son and that his name would be Jesus. He would be a king forever. This surprised and frightened Mary. She asked the angel how this would happen, as she was a virgin. She had never had sexual relations with a man. The angel said that the power of God would overshadow her and cause her to become pregnant. She would give birth to a son, and he would be called the Son of God. Mary believed God’s message, and she was willing for this to happen to her.

Some other possible headings for this section are:

The angel Gabriel predicts the virgin birth of Jesus the Christ

Angel Gabriel announces to the virgin Mary that God will cause her to give birth to a son

The Birth of Jesus is Announced (GNT)

1:30a

So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,

So the angel told her: This clause introduces what the angel said to Mary. The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as So is most often translated as “and” in English. Some other ways to translate it are:

Then the angel said to her (REB)

But the angel said to her (NIV)

In some languages a conjunction may not be needed. For example:

The angel said to her (GNT)

Connect this verse to 1:29 in a way that is natural in your language.

angel: See the note at 1:11a for suggestions about how to translate the word angel. See also angel, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

Do not be afraid, Mary: The angel used the phrase Do not be afraid to comfort and reassure Mary because she was troubled (1:29). The angel said the same words to Zechariah in 1:13a.

Some other ways to translate this reassurance are:

You do not need to be afraid, Mary.

Mary, do not be troubled/fearful.

1:30b

for you have found favor with God.

for: This conjunction introduces the reason why the angel told Mary not to be afraid. Some English versions, such as the NIV, do not translate this conjunction. Connect 1:30b to 1:30a in a way that is natural in your language.

you have found favor with God: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as you have found favor with God means “God has shown you favor/kindness.” It indicates here that God had blessed Mary and given her grace. In this context it specifically refers to the grace and blessing of being the mother of the Christ. Some other ways to translate this are:

You have received favor/grace from God

You are favored/blessed by God

God has been gracious to you

Notice that the verb found in the expression found favor means “obtained/received.” It does not mean to discover something or to find something after searching for it.

See grace, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

μὴ φοβοῦ, Μαριάμ; εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ Μή φοβοῦ Μαριάμ εὗρες γάρ χάριν παρά τῷ Θεῷ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could reverse the order of these phrases, since the second phrase gives the reason for the action that the first phrase describes. Alternate translation: [God is showing you his kindness, Mary, so you do not need to be afraid]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / imperative

μὴ φοβοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ Μή φοβοῦ Μαριάμ εὗρες γάρ χάριν παρά τῷ Θεῷ)

While the angel speaks these words in the form of a command, he is actually telling Mary something that he thinks will help and encourage her. Alternate translation: [You do not need to be afraid]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

εὗρες & χάριν παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ

˱you˲_found & favor (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ Μή φοβοῦ Μαριάμ εὗρες γάρ χάριν παρά τῷ Θεῷ)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [God is showing you his kindness]
