OET (OET-LV)Then they_were_laying_on their hands on them, and they_were_receiving the_ holy _spirit.

OET (OET-RV)So Peter and Yohan placed their hands on the new believers and they received the holy spirit.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ἐπετίθεσαν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ αὐτούς, καὶ ἐλάμβανον

˱they˲_/were/_laying_on their hands on them and ˱they˲_/were/_receiving

The first instance of the pronoun they stands for Peter and John, and the pronoun them and the second instance of they stand for the Samaritans. Alternate translation: [When Peter and John were laying their hands on the Samaritans, and the Samaritans were receiving]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / youdual

ἐπετίθεσαν

˱they˲_/were/_laying_on

Since this instance of the pronoun they stands for two men, it should be in the dual if your language uses that form. The same is true of “them” in 8:18 and “they” and “the ones” in 8:25.

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

ἐπετίθεσαν τὰς χεῖρας ἐπ’ αὐτούς

˱they˲_/were/_laying_on their hands on them

Peter and John laying their hands on the Samaritans who had believed Philip’s message of the gospel was a symbolic action that showed that Peter and John wanted God to give the Holy Spirit to these believers. If there is a gesture with similar meaning in your culture, you could consider using it here in your translation.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:9-24 Simon the sorcerer was a showman, dazzling the people of Samaria and making self-exalting claims. Simon’s attempt to obtain spiritual power through payment gave the name simony to the later corrupt practice of buying and selling ordination to church leadership (cp. 1 Tim 6:9-10). Peter strongly rebuked Simon’s wickedness.
