OET (OET-LV)But when they_went_up out_of the water, the_spirit of_the_master snatched the Filippos, and the eunuch not saw him no_longer, because/for he_was_going the way of_him rejoicing.

OET (OET-RV)But as they came out of the water, Yahweh’s spirit snatched Philip away and so the official never saw him again, but he continued on his journey very happy.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅτε Δέ ἀνέβησαν ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος Πνεῦμα Κυρίου ἥρπασεν τόν Φίλιππον καί οὐκ εἶδεν αὐτόν οὐκέτι ὁ εὐνοῦχος ἐπορεύετο γάρ τήν ὁδόν αὐτοῦ χαίρων)

While the word translated for often introduces a reason, that does not seem to be its function here. Luke is not saying that the eunuch did not see Philip anymore because he did not look for him but instead went on his way. Rather, the word for seems simply to introduce a continuation of the narrative. Alternate translation: [but] or [nevertheless]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:26-40 Philip obeyed the Holy Spirit’s leading and then seized the opportunity to share the message of Good News with a eunuch on the desert road . . . from Jerusalem to Gaza. This incident shows Philip’s remarkable effectiveness as a Christian apologist and evangelist in his outreach for Christ and in his commitment to bringing the Good News to all people regardless of social class or ethnicity.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
