OET (OET-LV)And the passage of_ the _scripture which he_was_reading was this:
he_was_led As a_sheep to the_slaughter, and silent as a_lamb before the one having_shaved him, thus he_is_ not _opening_up the mouth of_him.

OET (OET-RV)Now the particular passage that he was reading was this:
⇔ ‘He was led away like a sheep being led to the slaughterhouse,
⇔ and stayed as silent as a lamb being shorn
⇔ so he never opened his mouth.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὡς πρόβατον ἐπὶ σφαγὴν ἤχθη

as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἡ Δέ περιοχή τῆς Γραφῆς ἥν ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἦν αὕτη Ὡς πρόβατον ἐπί σφαγήν ἤχθη καί ὡς ἀμνός ἐναντίον τοῦ κείραντος αὐτόν ἄφωνος οὕτως οὐκ ἀνοίγει τό στόμα αὐτοῦ)

This a quotation from Isaiah [53:7–8](../isa/53/07.md). It describes the Messiah, whom Isaiah calls “the servant of the Lord.” But since the Ethiopian official did not know whom Isaiah was describing and had to ask Philip, it would be better not to specify that at this point by saying, for example, “The Messiah was led like a sheep to the slaugher” or “The servant of the Lord was led like a sheep to the slaughter”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ὡς πρόβατον ἐπὶ σφαγὴν ἤχθη

as (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἡ Δέ περιοχή τῆς Γραφῆς ἥν ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἦν αὕτη Ὡς πρόβατον ἐπί σφαγήν ἤχθη καί ὡς ἀμνός ἐναντίον τοῦ κείραντος αὐτόν ἄφωνος οὕτως οὐκ ἀνοίγει τό στόμα αὐτοῦ)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of slaughter, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [He was led like a sheep that was going to be slaughtered]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἤχθη

˱he˲_˓was˒_led

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [People led him]

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

ἐναντίον τοῦ κείραντος αὐτὸν ἄφωνος

before the_‹one› ˓having˒_shaved (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἡ Δέ περιοχή τῆς Γραφῆς ἥν ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἦν αὕτη Ὡς πρόβατον ἐπί σφαγήν ἤχθη καί ὡς ἀμνός ἐναντίον τοῦ κείραντος αὐτόν ἄφωνος οὕτως οὐκ ἀνοίγει τό στόμα αὐτοῦ)

A shearer is a person who cuts the wool off the sheep so that it may be used. If your readers would not be familiar with this word and you have no comparable word in your language, you could express the meaning in another way. Alternate translation: [is silent while its wool is being cut off]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

οὐκ ἀνοίγει τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ

not ˱he˲_˓is˒_opening_up (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἡ Δέ περιοχή τῆς Γραφῆς ἥν ἀνεγίνωσκεν ἦν αὕτη Ὡς πρόβατον ἐπί σφαγήν ἤχθη καί ὡς ἀμνός ἐναντίον τοῦ κείραντος αὐτόν ἄφωνος οὕτως οὐκ ἀνοίγει τό στόμα αὐτοῦ)

This means that the Messiah does not speak by association with the way a person would open his mouth in order to speak. Alternate translation: [he says nothing]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:26-40 Philip obeyed the Holy Spirit’s leading and then seized the opportunity to share the message of Good News with a eunuch on the desert road . . . from Jerusalem to Gaza. This incident shows Philip’s remarkable effectiveness as a Christian apologist and evangelist in his outreach for Christ and in his commitment to bringing the Good News to all people regardless of social class or ethnicity.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
