OET (OET-RV)because I perceive that you have a bitter attitude and ungodly habits.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-unknown

εἰς & χολὴν πικρίας

in & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἰς Γάρ χολήν πικρίας καί σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας ὁρῶ σέ ὄντα)

The gall plant has a bitter taste and is poisonous. If your readers would not be familiar with this plant, you could use the name of a similar plant in your area.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

εἰς & χολὴν πικρίας

in & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἰς Γάρ χολήν πικρίας καί σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας ὁρῶ σέ ὄντα)

Peter is using the gall plant by association to mean “poison.” Alternate translation: [in the poison of bitterness]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

εἰς & χολὴν πικρίας

in & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: εἰς Γάρ χολήν πικρίας καί σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας ὁρῶ σέ ὄντα)

Peter is describing bitterness as if it were made of gall or poison. He means that bitterness, here in the sense of envy, spiritually poisons a person, that is, it leads them towards spiritual death. Alternate translation: [dangerously envious]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

σύνδεσμον ἀδικίας

˓the˒_bond ˱of˲_unrighteousness

Peter speaks of the bond of unrighteousness as if unrighteousness were restraining Simon and keeping him a prisoner. He means Simon is not able to stop himself from sinning. Alternate translation: [unable to stop sinning]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:9-24 Simon the sorcerer was a showman, dazzling the people of Samaria and making self-exalting claims. Simon’s attempt to obtain spiritual power through payment gave the name simony to the later corrupt practice of buying and selling ordination to church leadership (cp. 1 Tim 6:9-10). Peter strongly rebuked Simon’s wickedness.
