uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-background

ἀνὴρ δέ τις ὀνόματι Σίμων, προϋπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ πόλει μαγεύων

/a/_man and certain ˱by˲_/the/_name Simon /was/_previously_starting in the city practicing_magic

Luke is providing background information to help readers understand who Simon was and why he said and did the things Luke describes in the rest of this chapter. Use a natural way in your language for introducing background information. Alternate translation: [Now there was a man named Simon who had been practicing sorcery in that city]

Note 2 topic: writing-participants

ἀνὴρ & τις ὀνόματι Σίμων

/a/_man & certain ˱by˲_/the/_name Simon

Luke uses this phrase to introduce Simon as a new character in the story. If your language has its own way of doing that, you could use it here in your translation.

Note 3 topic: translate-names

Σίμων

Simon

Simon is the name of a man. See how you translated this name, for a different man, in 1:13.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:9-24 Simon the sorcerer was a showman, dazzling the people of Samaria and making self-exalting claims. Simon’s attempt to obtain spiritual power through payment gave the name simony to the later corrupt practice of buying and selling ordination to church leadership (cp. 1 Tim 6:9-10). Peter strongly rebuked Simon’s wickedness.
