uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-background

ἀνὴρ δέ τις ὀνόματι Σίμων, προϋπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ πόλει μαγεύων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀνήρ Δέ τὶς ὀνόματι Σίμων προϋπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ πόλει μαγεύων καί ἐξιστάνων τό ἔθνος τῆς Σαμαρείας λέγων εἶναι τινά ἑαυτόν μέγαν)

Luke is providing background information to help readers understand who Simon was and why he said and did the things Luke describes in the rest of this chapter. Use a natural way in your language for introducing background information. Alternate translation: [Now there was a man named Simon who had been practicing sorcery in that city]

Note 2 topic: writing-participants

ἀνὴρ & τις ὀνόματι Σίμων

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀνήρ Δέ τὶς ὀνόματι Σίμων προϋπῆρχεν ἐν τῇ πόλει μαγεύων καί ἐξιστάνων τό ἔθνος τῆς Σαμαρείας λέγων εἶναι τινά ἑαυτόν μέγαν)

Luke uses this phrase to introduce Simon as a new character in the story. If your language has its own way of doing that, you could use it here in your translation.

Note 3 topic: translate-names

Σίμων

Simon

Simon is the name of a man. See how you translated this name, for a different man, in [1:13](../01/13.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:9-24 Simon the sorcerer was a showman, dazzling the people of Samaria and making self-exalting claims. Simon’s attempt to obtain spiritual power through payment gave the name simony to the later corrupt practice of buying and selling ordination to church leadership (cp. 1 Tim 6:9-10). Peter strongly rebuked Simon’s wickedness.
