OET (OET-LV)Yaʸsous answered to_him:
I have_spoken with_plainness to_the world, I always taught in the_synagogue and in the temple, where all the Youdaiōns are_coming_together, and I_spoke nothing in secret.

OET (OET-RV)Yeshua answered him, “I’ve spoken openly to the people. I always taught in the meeting halls and in the temple where Jewish people meet. I didn’t speak in secret

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τῷ κόσμῳ

˱to˲_the world

Jesus uses the world to refer to all of the people in the world. If this use of world would be confusing in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to all people]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

ἐγὼ παρρησίᾳ λελάληκα τῷ κόσμῳ

I ˱with˲_plainness ˓have˒_spoken ˱to˲_the world

Here, to the world is an exaggeration that Jesus uses to emphasize that he spoke publicly. If this would confuse your readers, you could use an equivalent expression from your language that shows emphasis. Alternate translation: [I have spoken openly to the people] or [I have spoken openly for everyone to hear]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

ἐν συναγωγῇ

in ˓the˒_synagogue

Jesus is speaking of synagogues in general, not of one particular synagogue. If this would be misunderstood in your language, use a more natural phrase. Alternate translation: [in synagogues]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

ὅπου πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέρχονται

where all the Jews ˓are˒_coming_together

Here, all the Jews is an exaggeration that Jesus uses to emphasize that Jesus spoke where many Jewish people could hear him. If this would confuse your readers, you could use an equivalent expression from your language that shows emphasis. Alternate translation: [where so many Jews come together]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι

the Jews

Here, the Jews refers to the Jewish people in general. It does not refer to the Jewish leaders. If this would be misunderstood in your language, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: [the Jewish people]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

18:1-40 After completing his farewell in the upper room (13:31–17:26), Jesus left the city and entered a garden just east of Jerusalem to pray. Here he was arrested, taken under guard into the city, and interrogated by the Jewish leaders. The climactic “time” that Jesus referred to repeatedly throughout the Gospel (see 2:4; see also study note on 12:23) was now at hand.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
