uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καί ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτόν ὁ ἡγεμών λέγων σύ Εἶ ὁ βασιλεύς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη αὐτῷ Σύ λέγεις)

The word Now indicates that what follows is the continuation of the story of Jesus’ trial before Pilate, which began in [27:2](../27/02.md). If your language has a way of continuing a story after a break from the main story line, you could use it here. Alternate translation: [Returning to the story of Jesus,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ & Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη

¬the & Jesus ˓was˒_stood

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, it is clear from the context that it was the Jewish council. Alternate translation: [was standing] or [the Jewish leaders made Jesus stand]

Note 3 topic: writing-quotations

λέγων

saying

Consider natural ways of introducing direct quotations in your language. Alternate translation: [and he said]

Note 4 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

(Occurrence 2) δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καί ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτόν ὁ ἡγεμών λέγων σύ Εἶ ὁ βασιλεύς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη αὐτῷ Σύ λέγεις)

The word But introduces the next thing that happened. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces the next event, or you could leave But untranslated. Alternate translation: [Then]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

σὺ λέγεις

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς ἐστάθη ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ ἡγεμόνος καί ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτόν ὁ ἡγεμών λέγων σύ Εἶ ὁ βασιλεύς τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὁ Δέ Ἰησοῦς ἔφη αὐτῷ Σύ λέγεις)

Here, much as in [26:25](../26/25.md), the phrase You say it indicates that the speaker acknowledges the truth of what the other person said. Jesus uses this phrase to indirectly indicate that the governor is right to suggest that Jesus is the King of the Jews. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different word or phrase that gives an indirect positive response to a request. If necessary, you could express the idea more directly, as the UST does. Alternate translation: [That is what you say] or [Your words show what is true]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

27:11 king of the Jews: The Sanhedrin’s original charge of blasphemy (26:65-66; 27:1) held no interest to the Romans, who saw it as a Jewish religious question (cp. Acts 25:18-20). The charge was therefore changed to incriminate Jesus in Roman eyes as a political rebel (see Luke 23:2).
