The phrase released his spirit could: (1) simply indicate that Jesus died. In this case, the phrase is a polite way to refer to death. Alternate translation: [breathed his last] or [expired]; (2) mean that Jesus voluntarily chose to die at this moment. In this case, Matthew is saying that Jesus died and also that he chose to die. Alternate translation: [allowed himself to die] or [willingly died]
