OET (OET-LV) for/because the law of_the spirit of_ the _life in chosen_one/messiah Yaʸsous, freed you from the law of_ the _sin and the death.
In this section Paul reminded the believers in Rome that God does not condemn them, because the Holy Spirit has set them free from sin and death. Jesus became like an Old Testament sin offering to remove the consequences of our sin. The laws of Moses demanded a righteous life, and in the Holy Spirit we can live that way.
The people who live according to the sinful nature seek to do things that are in accord with that nature. Also, they cannot please God, cannot follow his laws, are hostile to him, and will be punished with death forever. The people who live according to the Holy Spirit seek to do things that are in accord with his desire.
Christians allow the Holy Spirit to work in them. When they do that, they are as if dead to sin and God will give them life. Those without the Holy Spirit do not belong to Jesus Christ.
We put to death the deeds of the sinful nature. We do that by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are God’s children and can do as he does (again, by the power of the Holy Spirit). If we suffer as Jesus suffered, God will give to us his promised inheritance in heaven.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
We must live according to the Holy Spirit, not according to sinfulness
Be Ruled by the Spirit (NCV)
Living by the Power of God’s Spirit (CEV)
For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free
For the power of the Spirit that gives life has freed you(sing/plur) in Jesus, the Christ/Messiah,
For the authority of the Holy Spirit, who causes you to live, has released/untied you, because you believe in Jesus, the one/person whom God appointed to save/rescue people.
For: Here this word introduces the basis for Paul saying that God does not condemn believers.Moo (on TW).
in Christ Jesus: The word in here indicates that the Holy Spirit has freed us because we believed that Jesus is the Christ.
Christ Jesus: The order of the words Christ Jesus emphasizes that Jesus is the Christ/Messiah. See how you translated this phrase in 8:1.
the law of the Spirit of life: Here the word law probably refers to a controlling principle, telling Paul, in his thinking, to do this or that, as it does in 7:23 in the phrase “the law of my mind.”See Moo (page 474). Some scholars (for example, Schreiner (page 400) and Jewett (page 481)) think the word here refers to the laws of Moses, but then Paul would be disagreeing with what he says in the very next verse (Moo, page 474). See how you translated the word law in “the law of my mind” in 7:23.
the Spirit of life: This phrase refers to the Holy Spirit. The words of life indicate here that the Holy Spirit is the source of life.Moo (on TW) says it refers to ‘the Spirit who confers life.” Here are other ways to translate this phrase:
the Spirit, who gives life (GW)
the Spirit that brings life (NCV)
set you free: There is a textual issue here.
Some Greek manuscripts have the word you(sing). (BSB, ESV, NIV11, NJB, NASB, NRSV, NABRE, NLT, GW, CEV, NET, REB, NCV2005)
Some Greek manuscripts have the word me. (RSV, NIV84, GNT, KJV, NCV91)
It is recommended that you follow option (1), because the UBS Greek NT 5 supports it. Some of the English versions support option (2) perhaps because they are older translations and an earlier version of the UBS Greek New Testament supported it.
set…free: The verb here is in the past tense. The Holy Spirit frees a person when he or she begins believing in Jesus.
from the law of sin and death.
from the principle/rule that people always sin and die.
He has released/untied you from sinfulness and death.
the law of sin: See how you translated the phrase the law of sin in 7:25.

For indicates that what follows this word relates to what came before it. For here indicates that this verse gives the reason why what Paul said in the previous verse is true. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [This is due to the fact that]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
ὁ & νόμος τοῦ Πνεύματος τῆς ζωῆς
the & law ˱of˲_the Spirit ¬the ˱of˲_life
Paul is using the possessive form to describe the law that is characterized by the Spirit of life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [the law that is characterized by the Spirit of life]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὁ & νόμος
the & law
Here, the law refers to a rule or principle. It does not refer to the laws God gave the Jews. See how you translated the similar use of law in [7:21](../07/21.md).
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession
τοῦ Πνεύματος τῆς ζωῆς
˱of˲_the Spirit ¬the ˱of˲_life
Paul is using the possessive form to describe the Spirit that produces life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [of the Spirit that produces life]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τοῦ Πνεύματος
˱of˲_the Spirit
Here, the Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [of the Holy Spirit]

The phrase in Christ Jesus could refer to: (1) the means by which the Spirit set a person free. Alternate translation: [of life set you free in Christ Jesus] (2) a characteristic of the life. Alternate translation: [of the life that is in Christ Jesus set you free]
Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἠλευθέρωσέν σε ἀπὸ τοῦ νόμου τῆς ἁμαρτίας καὶ τοῦ θανάτου
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὁ γάρ νόμος τοῦ Πνεύματος τῆς ζωῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ἠλευθέρωσεν σέ ἀπό τοῦ νόμου τῆς ἁμαρτίας καί τοῦ θανάτου)
Here Paul speaks of the law of sin and death as if it were an object or person someone could be set free from. Paul means that the law that resulted in sin and death does not apply to those who are united with Christ Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [has caused the law of sin and death to no longer control you]
Note 11 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τοῦ νόμου τῆς ἁμαρτίας καὶ τοῦ θανάτου

This could refer to: (1) the principle that people have a sinful nature that results in death, as mentioned in [7:23–25](../07/23.md). Alternate translation: [the principle that is my sinful nature that leads to death] (2) the laws God gave the Jews, which Paul previously said in [7:5](../07/05.md) stimulate people to sin more. Alternate translation: [God’s laws that stimulate sin and death]
Note 12 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
τοῦ θανάτου
˱of˲_the the ¬the death
Here, death refers to spiritual death, which is eternal punishment in hell that occurs after physical death. See how you translated the same use of death in [6:16](../06/16.md).
8:2 the power (literally the law) of the life-giving Spirit: This reference to power or law could refer to the law of Moses, which the Spirit can use to produce life. But because Paul does not portray the law as a life-giving entity, “law” here, as in 7:23, probably means principle or power. The Holy Spirit is a power that frees the believer from the power of sin that leads to death.
OET (OET-LV) for/because the law of_the spirit of_ the _life in chosen_one/messiah Yaʸsous, freed you from the law of_ the _sin and the death.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
