OET (OET-LV)For/Because the ones according_to flesh being, the things of_the flesh are_thinking, but the ones according_to spirit, the things of_the spirit.

OET (OET-RV)People who live according to their physical desires, think about physical things, but those who live according to the spirit, think about spiritual things.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 8:1–17: Believers live by the Holy Spirit

In this section Paul reminded the believers in Rome that God does not condemn them, because the Holy Spirit has set them free from sin and death. Jesus became like an Old Testament sin offering to remove the consequences of our sin. The laws of Moses demanded a righteous life, and in the Holy Spirit we can live that way.

The people who live according to the sinful nature seek to do things that are in accord with that nature. Also, they cannot please God, cannot follow his laws, are hostile to him, and will be punished with death forever. The people who live according to the Holy Spirit seek to do things that are in accord with his desire.

Christians allow the Holy Spirit to work in them. When they do that, they are as if dead to sin and God will give them life. Those without the Holy Spirit do not belong to Jesus Christ.

We put to death the deeds of the sinful nature. We do that by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are God’s children and can do as he does (again, by the power of the Holy Spirit). If we suffer as Jesus suffered, God will give to us his promised inheritance in heaven.

Here are other possible headings for this section:

We must live according to the Holy Spirit, not according to sinfulness

Be Ruled by the Spirit (NCV)

Living by the Power of God’s Spirit (CEV)

8:5a–d

This verse describes two groups of people: those who do not believe in Jesus (8:5a–b) and those who believe in him (8:5c–d).

8:5a

Those who live according to the flesh

The Greek of 8:5a begins with a word that is usually translated as “For.” This word introduces a sentence that explains something about what Paul said in 8:4.See Cranfield (page 385) or Jewett (page 487). In some languages, it may be most natural to omit this word and leave the connection to 8:4 implicit, as the BSB does.

Those who live according to the flesh: The Greek is literally “the ones being according to flesh.” It indicates that this group of people always follow human nature. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

the ones/people who exist only according to human nature

Those who live as their human nature tells them to (GNT)

whoever live according to the desires of the bodyYongkom Back Translation, by author, corrected.

flesh: This word refers to having a body, with its needs and passions. See how you translated this word in 8:4.

8:5b

set their minds on the things of the flesh;

set their minds on the things of the flesh: The Greek word that the BSB translates as set their minds on refers to thinking a certain way about, or having a strong opinion about, or supporting a cause.L&S II.2.a, L&N (c), and BDAG 2.b, respectively. Here it probably refers to being focused on things related to the body. This includes such things as food, drink, sex, survival, and power over others. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

are concerned with the things of the flesh (NABRE)

are thinking only of the deeds of the human nature

think only about things of the natural self

8:5c

but those who live according to the Spirit

those who live according to the Spirit: The Greek is literally “the ones according to spirit/Spirit.” The verb live is implied from 8:5a. It indicates that this group of people follow the Holy Spirit. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

the ones/people who exist according to the Holy Spirit

Those who live as the Spirit tells them to (GNT)

whoever live according to the SpiritYongkom Back Translation, by author.

8:5d

set their minds on the things of the Spirit.

set their minds on the things of the Spirit: Here the word Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit. This group of people are focused on the thoughts and deeds that the Holy Spirit wants us to think or do. Here are other ways to translate this clause:

are concerned with the things of the Spirit

are thinking of the thoughts and deeds that please the Holy Spirit

think only about things that the Holy Spirit wants

γὰρ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

For indicates that what follows this word explains what came before it. For here indicates that this verse gives the reason why what Paul said in the previous verse is true. Use a natural way in your language for indicating a reason. Alternate translation: [This is due to the fact that]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

σάρκα & τῆς σαρκὸς

flesh & ˱of˲_the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

See how you translated the flesh in the previous verse.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

τὰ τῆς σαρκὸς φρονοῦσιν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

The phrase set their minds on is an idiom that refers to thinking carefully about something or being intent on doing something. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [are intent on doing the things of the flesh]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὰ τῆς σαρκὸς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

Paul is using the possessive form to describe things that are related to the flesh. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [things pertaining to the flesh] or [fleshly things]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

οἱ δὲ κατὰ Πνεῦμα

the_‹ones› the_‹ones› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

Paul is leaving out some of the words that a clause would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the previous clause. Alternate translation: [but those existing according to the Spirit]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

τὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

Paul is leaving out some of the words that a phrase would need in many languages to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from the previous clause. Alternate translation (omitting the comma): [set their minds on the things of the Spirit]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὰ τοῦ Πνεύματος

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οἱ Γάρ κατά σάρκα ὄντες τά τῆς σαρκός φρονοῦσιν οἱ δέ κατά Πνεῦμα τά τοῦ Πνεύματος)

Paul is using the possessive form to describe things that are related to the Spirit. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: [things pertaining to the Spirit]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:5 think about sinful things: This phrase describes the general nature of a person’s will, not just the mental process of thought (see also 12:3; 15:5; Phil 2:2, 5).
