OET (OET-LV) And whom he_predetermined, these also he_called, and whom he_called, these also he_justified, and whom he_justified, these also he_glorified.
OET (OET-RV) The ones he’d predetermined he also called, and the ones he’d called, he also declared guiltless, and the ones declared guiltless, he also honoured in heaven.
In this section Paul said that the things that cause us suffering are only small compared to the glory that God will give us in the future, renewed world. The created world waits for God to reveal us, his adopted children, in our new bodies, because he will also renew the created world at that time. We and the created world groan waiting for that renewal. Paul then described what hope is.
The Holy Spirit helps us where we are weak. He also helps us to pray and intercedes for us. God causes all things to work for our good. He chose us to become like Jesus in word and deed, and become like him like a brother is like his brother. He chose us before the creation of the world, called us, made us righteous, and has glorified us.
Here are other possible headings for this section:
We wait for God to give glory to us
Later we will be together with God in his glory
The Holy Spirit helps us today and God will glorify us in the future
And those He predestined, He also called;
And they whom he chose long ago, he also called them and they accepted,
Also/Furthermore, he/God decided ahead of time that these people would be his people, and he chose/appointed them to become his people.
those He predestined, He also called: This clause refers to all believers. The word those is first in the clause because that is what Paul wanted to talk about. Some languages have a more strict word order. For example:
he also called those whom he predestined
some/these people, he predestined them and he also called them
called: See how you translated this word in 8:28.
those He called, He also justified;
and these people whom he called, he also judged that they are right,
And he not only called these people, but he declared them to be righteous in his sight.
those He called: This refers to the same group as the people in 8:30a. This should be clear in your translation.
justified: Here this word means “be found in the right, be free of charges.”BDAG, sense 2.β. Here are other ways to translate this word:
declared right
judged that they are now righteous
See how you translated justified in 3:24 or 5:9.
those He justified, He also glorified.
and these people whom he said are now right with him, he also gave glory to them.
And he not only declared these people to be righteous in his sight, but he caused them to have glory/greatness/honor.
glorified: This word refers to the greatness/splendor and blessings of God that he will give to us believers. Here it implies God giving glorified bodies to us as a part of this glorification. See how you translated this word in 8:17.
The Greek word here has the form that usually indicates past tense. This may be to indicate that:
the future glorification is certain,Morris (page 333) and Schreiner (page 454).
the process of glorification has already begun and will finish when we stand before God in heaven.Jewett (page 530).
You should translate this word with your usual way to indicate past tense.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἐκάλεσεν & ἐκάλεσεν
˱he˲_called & ˱he˲_called
Here, called refers to God choosing people to be his people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [chose to be his people … he chose]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture
καὶ ἐδόξασεν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὕς Δέ προώρισεν τούτους καί ἐκάλεσεν καί οὕς ἐκάλεσεν τούτους καί ἐδικαίωσεν οὕς δέ ἐδικαίωσεν τούτους καί ἐδόξασεν)
Paul uses the past tense in order to refer to something that will certainly happen in the future. If it would not be natural to do that in your language, you could use the future tense. Alternate translation: [will also glorify]
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
