OET (OET-LV)Not and only that, but also ourselves, the first-fruit of_the spirit having, we also ourselves in ourselves are_groaning, adoption_as_sons eagerly_waiting, the redemption of_the body of_us.

OET (OET-RV)And not only that, but we ourselves who have the initial tastes of the spirit life, we also are groaning and like children waiting for our bodies to be set free from slavery

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὴν ἀπαρχὴν τοῦ Πνεύματος ἔχοντες

the first-fruit ˱of˲_the Spirit having

This clause could refer to: (1) Paul and his Christian readers. Alternate translation: “those who have the firstfruits of the Spirit” (2) the reason why Christians groan. Alternate translation: “because we have the firstfruits of the Spirit”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τὴν ἀπαρχὴν τοῦ Πνεύματος

the first-fruit ˱of˲_the Spirit

Paul is using the possessive form to describe the firstfruits that is the Spirit. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the firstfruits, that is, the Spirit”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὴν ἀπαρχὴν

the first-fruit

Here Paul uses firstfruits to refer to the Holy Spirit as if they were the first crop that was harvested during the harvest season. Paul means that the Holy Spirit is the first part of the blessings that God gives Christians. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the first gift”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rpronouns

(Occurrence 2) αὐτοὶ

ourselves

Paul uses the word ourselves here to emphasize that Christians also share in the suffering of the creation. Use a way that is natural in your language to indicate this emphasis. Alternate translation: “our very selves”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν ἑαυτοῖς στενάζομεν

in ourselves /are/_groaning

Here Paul uses groan to refer to the emotional anguish that Christians experience while they wait to be with God in heaven. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “experience emotional anguish”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

υἱοθεσίαν & τὴν ἀπολύτρωσιν

adoption_as_sons & the redemption

See how you translated adoption in 8:15 and redemption in 3:24.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

υἱοθεσίαν ἀπεκδεχόμενοι

adoption_as_sons eagerly_waiting

Here, our adoption refers to when we will become full members of God’s family, as adopted sons. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “waiting for when we are fully members of God’s family”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

τοῦ σώματος ἡμῶν

˱of˲_the ˱of˲_the body ˱of˲_us

Paul is speaking of the bodies of believers in general, not of one particular body. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural phrase. Alternate translation: “of our bodies”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

8:23 we believers also groan: “Groaning” expresses a frustrated longing for God’s deliverance from the difficulties and oppression of this life (see Exod 3:7; Lam 1:22; Ezek 24:17; 2 Cor 5:2).
• we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory (literally we have the first harvest of the Spirit): In the Old Testament, the phrase first harvest or firstfruits often describes the offering of the first and best part of a harvest to God (see Exod 23:19; Lev 2:12; 23:10; cp. 1 Cor 15:20, 23). The Holy Spirit is God’s pledge that he will see his work in us through to its conclusion (see Eph 1:14).
• Although we have already been adopted by God as his children, the full rights of that adoption—our inheritance (see Rom 8:17)—are not yet ours. In this life, Christians live in tension between the “already” of redemption and the “not yet” of the glory to be revealed.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the SR-GNT.
