OET (OET-LV)Indeed if/because if indeed_(eat) it_had_eaten the_day the_troops of_plunder_of enemies_of_their which it_found if/because now not defeat it_has_been_great in/on/at/with_Fəlishtiy.

OET (OET-RV)Actually, if the troops had eaten what they’d found from the plunder of their enemies today, how much better it would have been because we might have had an even more decisive victory over the Philistines.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

אַ֗ף כִּ֡י לוּא֩ אָכֹ֨ל אָכַ֤ל הַיּוֹם֙ הָעָ֔ם מִשְּׁלַ֥ל

also/though that/for/because/then/when if to_eat he_ate the=day the,troops of,plunder_of

Jonathan is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [How much more would all of us have remained strong if eating, the people had eaten today from the plunder]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / reduplication

אָכֹ֨ל אָכַ֤ל & הָעָ֔ם

to_eat he_ate & the,troops

Jonathan is repeating forms of the verb “eat” to intensify the expression of his wish that the people had eaten. If your language can repeat words for intensification, it would be appropriate to do that here in your translation. If not, your language may have another way of expressing the intensification. Alternate translation: [the people had surely eaten]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

כִּ֥י

that/for/because/then/when

Jonathan is using the word translated For to indicate a contrast between what could have happened and what actually happened. Alternate translation: [But instead] or [By contrast]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

מַכָּ֖ה בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים

slaughter in/on/at/with,Philistines

See how you translated the term striking in [4:10](../04/10.md). Alternate translation: [the slaughter among the Philistines]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
